With Ponson's outing last night, the Yankees have to decide who they want to keep in the fourth and fifth starter spot.  Right now they have Rasner, Giese, and Sidney Ponson.  I would like to see Ponson keep a spot in the rotation until he loses it, but the wheels can fall off for Ponson in a heartbeat.  Giese looked bad yesterday, and Rasner has been really inconsistant the last few weeks.

Who do you guys see in the Fourth and Fifth spot?  Shawn Chacon is someone who interests me as an insurance policy once he is allowed to sign with another team.  Right now, this how I see the rotation:

1) Andy Pettite

2) Joba Chamberlain

3) Mike Mussina

4) & 5) Daryl Rasner, Sidney Ponson, Dan Giese, Kei Igawa or ???

From what I've read, Ian Kennedy could be back in July and Phil Hughes and Carl Pavano could be back in August.  That means in August the Yankees will have Andy Pettite, Joba Chamberlain, Mike Mussina, Daryl Rasner, Ian Kennedy, Phil Hughes, and Ian Kennedy healthy.  I know everyone wants the Yankees to make a big splash with a starting pitcher, but I would rather see them ride it out and use the pieces they have.

Dan Giese definitely has to be sent back to the minors. Kei Igawa needs to be sent back to Japan.

Right now, I think the 4 & 5 spots in the rotation should go to Darrell Rasner and Sidney Ponson. That is until Ponson does something to lose the job. In July or August, whenever Phil Hughes is healthy, I would like to see him back in the rotation, replacing whoever's doing worse.

As for Ian Kennedy, I'm not sold on him. I didn't really like him at the end of the season last year, even though he had some success. And Carl Pavano, who knows. I guess it would be nice to see him come up and pitch great, and actually earn a little of his over-priced contract. but I wouldn't count on it. You never know though, maybe he'll get healthy and be that "lightning in a bottle" type of guy that sparks the team down the stretch. But like I said, I wouldn't count on it.

I have to agree completely with R.T.N.Y. The Yankees have to come with Darrell Rasner and Sidney Ponson. Dan Geise is a career AAAA guy. Pitches great in AAA, but can quite get it done in the majors. Kei Igawa I believe could be helpful in the bullpen at some point, but as far as I am concerned his starting days are over (for this year barring major injuries). When Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy get back, it will be time to reevaluate. Kennedy at least might need some more time in AAA.

I agree with Rasner and Ponson and then once Hughes is ready, move one of these guys to the pen.  I do have to say though, that I like the change of pace that Giese can bring after having a fireballer like Joba in and or Hughes when he comes back.  His stuff matched with the harder throwers works well on keeping the hitters off balance.  Ultimately, I think Giese goes back down.  I'm not writing off this year, but I can't help but look ahead to some of the arms we'll have in the near future.  Things will be back to normal eventually, the Yankee dynasty will reign again.

I say don't tinker with anything right now,but keep an eye on Rasner. Seems the video tapes of him have finally hit every clubhouse and he's fooling nobody right now! Let Kennedy prove he can dominate again in the minors before bringing him back,at this point he is no better than ponson or rasner, probable worse. Hughes? Can someone tell me what the normal healing procedure is for a cracked rib sustained while coughing??? 3 or 4 months seems to be a bit much to me! And whoever had the sack to mention that name who's initials are C.P. shame on you,I'm now ill! I agree that Kei is destined for a one way ticket back to the land of the rising sun,but for now,Scranton will have to do,sent back yesterday! If we can get 6 innings out of Rasner and Ponson that's plenty!
