In a couple of weeks (July 17-20), the British Open will play out at Royal Birkdale, in England.  Back on this side of the pond another tournament, the US Bank Championship, will also play out in Milwaukee.

Why is there an opposite event during the British Open?   If I remember correctly, this has been the case for many years (BC Open a few years back).

Why no such tournaments during the Masters, US Open, or PGA Championship?  An argument for events concurrent to WGC events is that the WGC events are invitational, or at the very least have select and reduced fields, and therefore the "rank-and-file" deserve an opportunity to play.  Certainly the British Open cannot be considered equivalent to the WGCs in this regard.  And if you were to suggest it's because of the rank-and-file 'Americans' not qualified for the Open, then why not an opposite event during the Masters, which has nearly as limited a field as the WGCs (especially if  you consider the past (read: old) champions, amateurs, foreign invites, etc.).

something i always wondered too. I heard that Kenny Perry is planning on playing the US event to give him better ryder cup points even though he must have easily qualified for any major this year.  They should have a rule that if you qualify for the "main" event, you cannot play in the smaller event.

I think there are a few reasons.  First the British Open at one time  was not a "PGA Tour" official event, so the tour had a scheduled event available for tour members to play.  Second, the British is a highly international field, so while it is a full field event, there aren't necessarily the same number of American players or tour members in the field compared to a standard tour event.  Third, the substantial time difference allows a U.S. based event to not interfere with the British Open telecast.  British Open runs early morning until about noon EDT.  The PGA Tour event runs in it's regular time slot from 3:00pm-6:00pm EDT--probably on The Golf Channel.

You can't restrict someone from entering an event that his PGA Tour card allows him to play in. Corey Pavin skipped the Open Championship last year to defend his US Bank title and nobody really complained. Perry has only been given flack because he has vocally stated that he did not want to compete in the U.S. Open on a course that he has only had one top-25 finish in the last 8 years. I don't think there is anything wrong with what he did or is now doing.
