If Manny wasn't a baseball player, and worked as say a FedEx delivery guy and shoved a 60 year old co-worker down to the ground, what would the general opinion and reaction be? The ONLY reason this is tolerated is because this immature jerk can hit the hell out of a ball.

If you or I did that to someone at our job, we'd be fired and probably arrested for assault and battery. The fact the he did this to a 60 year old makes it totally reprehensible.

Manny is a classless jerk and the Sox should take some sort of punitive action against him. Suspend him for a week or two. Seriously, the guy could have really injured an older person over basically a childish temper tantrum. I guarantee you if this had been something Derek Jeter did, Red Sox fans would be howling for blood. Instead we get this ridiculous, enabling "Manny Being Manny" bulls%&@!

At least Manny did it to someone who was 60 years old.

WAs Pedro ever benched, or even fined, for showing the 72-year old, hobbling Don Zimmer to the ground?

Sure the 72 year old Zimmer was rushing toward Pedro at full speed and Pedro might have hurt himself dancing out of the way, but that still doesn't excuse his shoving the man to the ground.

You're right about the FedEx guy but it has nothing to do with this topic.  Let's try another example:  If Manny was a stock fund manager who made millions for his company each year and he shoved a 60 year old co-worker to the ground, do you think he'd be fired?  I doubt it.

My wife and I were talking about it last night and she made the argument that she'd be fired if she did that.  I asked her if she would have been able to fire any of her employees if they had done that and she grudgingly admitted that is is very hard to fire someone these days.  It makes a cut argument but the reality is that it would be very unlikely that you'd get fired for doing something like that.

You also mention that the Sox should take some sort of "punitive action" against him.  I'm curious how you know they didn't.  Please explain.

For the record, I think what he may have done is inexcusable.  I also doubt that the Red Sox organization is just letting Manny skate on this one.  I suspect that some action was taken and you'll never hear about it.  I don't think they have to announce any action that was taken - the people involved know what was done.

Interesting questions you raised, but let me try to answer them.

I used FedEx as an example most of us can relate to - I don't personally know any stock fund managers, so I can't theorize on how this would be handled in that world. The point is that employee on employee violence can't be tolerated in any business setting - regardless of how much money said employee makes for the company. The company is always the priority, not the whims of a particular employee.

You're right - we don't know if the Sox took any action against Manny. They haven't made public any decision, which is a mistake. The actions Manny took against the other guy are now part of the public record, and the Sox management should at the least release a statement saying the Manny has been disciplined. They don't need to state what that is, but it would be good PR to announce that something has been done.

The reason we the fans should be aware of the actions taken is because we are the base that supports these businesses. Without us, there would be no Mannys and Red Sox. They do owe us, as fans and patrons of their product, more than they've done to this point.

ADDave - Thanks for your response.  To be honest with you, I don't know any stock fund managers either.  It was a job I thought of where, like elite MLB players, they make a lot of money for their employers.  I suspect they would find a way to handle the situation internally but there is a major difference when the incident is known publicly (as is the case with Manny).

Throw in that there was a minor shoving incident in the dugout with Youkilis earlier this year and there is a trend developing.  This is looking more like Manny's last year in Boston since his contract can be up at the end of the year (Sox hold options for the next two years at $20M/year).
