I was watching the Cardinals-Mets game on ESPN last night, and the announcers were discussing the possibility of Dave Duncan being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

They mentioned that while managers, owners, announcers, and sportswriters have all been inducted to the Hall for various contributions to baseball, NO coach has ever been inducted.  They both seemed to think Duncan would make a good candidate to be the first once he retired.

I had honestly never thought about it, but the idea is starting to grow on me....  Granted, being a Cards fan I guess I am a bit biased...

So what do you guys think?  About a coach being elected in general, and Dave Duncan specifically?

I think that he should be the 1st and maybe the only coach at this time to be in the hall. I am slightly bias to him being a Cards fan but look at his history. Even befoe coming to the Cards he had some great years coaching the A's staff and has always gotten more from his pitchers than any other coach has. Just look at 06, Weaver went from junk heap to World Series star. Then he goes to Seattle to make the big buck and implodes. Not to mention Suppan, Woody Williams, and many many others. Heck, he might even be able to turn some of us into passable pitchers.

if a coach is to make it to the hall of fame then no coach would be better then duncan.  There has been many pitchers that were medicore at best and duncan turned them around.  there has been some pitchers that we hope he could turn around( Kip Wells) but nobody is perfect.

I would be really shocked if they did because he's not in a position that commands the attention of the hall.   But if you have LaRussa in the HOF I don't see how you can't put Dunc in too.  I couldn't think of any coach more deserving and it would be a real shame if he was forgotten with all of the amazing things he's done.  I think the biggest was Dave Stewart

You had the 2004 and 2005 seasons, both with 100 or more wins. Then 2006, which was all pitching. If TLR and Duncan pull a couple more rabbits out of their hats over the next few years, they're both in the hall, no doubt about it.

TLR is already getting recognition for the incredible job he has done this year.  If they were to win it all, it would pretty much cement his reputation as a miracle worker.

As for Dunc, you've got projects like Pineiro, Wellemeyer, Lohse, and bringing Wainwright along.  And these guys are young.  We could be a powerhouse for several years in a row.  Grin.

I think that Dave Duncan really does deserve to go into the Hall of Fame. He can really turn careers around. Like this year the Cardinals have some really solid starters, but they were people that nobody had heard of before Dave Duncan helped them out. Last night Kyle Lohse picked up his 10th win. He got national attention because the game was on ESPN and not just FSN Midwest. Who was Kyle Lohse before this? Chris Carpenter is a Cy Young award winner. But when we got him from Toronto he was not that great but now under Dave Duncan he has evolved just like the other pitchers with the Cardinals. Other than Joel Pineiro all of our pitchers have winning records. But with Dave Duncan teaching him he will be able to post a winning record. The Cardinals don't have any superstar pitchers, as a matter of fact before some of them came to STL they weren't good. But Dave Duncan has turned them into exceptional players. We have really good pitchers. I don't know how but Dave Dunc making some stars. If I was in the majors I would definitely want him as my pitching coach.

Well TLR is in, he could manage for ten more years and never win another game and he would still be in the HOF.  He's third in all time W's as a manager and hopefully if he sticks around long enough can finish second.  I think if the Cards end up in the playoffs TLR would be in line for his 5th manager of the year award.  Point being they don't need to win it all for people to realize how good TLR is.

It wouldn't hurt Duncan for the Cards to be successful for a few more years though.  You can look at the numbers for every team
