Im not sure if anyone has brought this up yet but when Spurrier got to Florida, they had zero SEC titles and obviously, zero national titles. Tressel came to a program who was already a power and put up similar numbers to Spurrier who took over a program that had potential but was very mediocre. I think Spurrier had a much tougher road yet achieved generally the same success.

As an unbiased party, I would take Spurrier. It is hard to say specifically, because in this debate I can easily see the counter arguments to my own arguments.

Ltyjr, as to your point above, it is in some aspects harder to take over an established power than it is to build up a fledgling one. There are expectations and traditions that can not be broken. It is sometimes hard for a new coach to establish his own style.

The only thing that I think Spurrier has hands down over the Vest is Charisma. I love listening to The Ole Ball Coach speak. he plays dumb with the best of them.

Tress got my biased vote... realistically this is a monster of a question. You have to absolutely love Spurrier's trash talkin... there were times in the 90's when I would watch the same segment of sportscenter 5 times running just to watch the same smokin hot crack TOBC had for that week ( you cant spell Citrus without UT, etc)  Ok back to the question, both are winners hands down so Im taking the realistic cowards way out.. In the SEC where the weather is warm year round and the offense is send 4 to 5 screaming fast receivers down the field ive got to go with TOBC. In the Big 10 where the weather can be brutal and you have to coach/recruit to match both good and bad weather conditions and play close to the vest ( no pun intended) with field position and defense crucial i'd go with Tress in a heartbeat

I'm an OSU fan, but I'd hate to say I think Spurrier is better. He makes better adjustments during the game.

My vote is for Tressel.  While Spurrier is a good coach, it seems Tressel can get the quality players it takes to be a winning program. Spurrier did a great job at Duke and Florida in getting players to come the respective schools he was at, but it seems that if players really wanted to play for a particular coach, it would not matter where they were at (unless they were at a D-1AA or lower), they would come and play.   Right now, Tressel is getting those players (IMO).

That seems fair, Dew, but he is also getting them at one of the most prestigious programs in the history of College Football. Many Heismans, many all-americans, many Pro Bowlers, numerous national championships. You cannot give Tressel all the credit for the recruiting job he has done.

South Carolina has really very few of the things in those categories if any at all in some.

Tressel does do a great job recruiting, I just don't necessarily think that it is all because of him. I mean ND hasn't won in a few years and the name is still bringing in high level recruits.
