"This team is mediocre, we're only 38-38, and we've got no chance of turning it around. Sorry guys, but this just isn't our year. Our third baseman is carrying this team by himself, we've got no middle relief, and honestly, do you really trust these young starters to keep this up down the stretch? Sure, Glavine is great, but beyond him can we trust everyone else? Steve Avery stunk last year and now's he's suddenly good? It's not going to last! Charlie Leibrandt's ok, I guess, but nothing exciting. John Smoltz stinks and is never going to put it together. If anyone thinks this team has any sort of shot with a starter with a 4.82 ERA, they're idiots. Ron Gant is killing us with his .231 batting average. He's got so much talent, but why can't he be selective?"
"Send Smoltz to the minors! He's got so much ability, but he's never going to turn it around. He sucks and is the reason we won't win this year. Do you guys really think we can make the playoffs with this guy? He's greedy and arrogant and thinks everything in the world should be given to him, but he's not going to turn it around, and he's not going to help and he's probably going to be just a mediocre player for this mediocre franchise. He's 2-10. 2-10!"
"It's time to jump ship. We're at .500, we're 7 1/2 out, and the Dodgers have two of the best sluggers in baseball with Darryl Strawberry and Eddie Murray. Do you really think we can catch them? We're not even in 2nd place! It ain't happening, folks. Let's start looking at trading Otis Nixon so we can at least get something for him before he leaves as a free agent after the year."

Im not jumping to conclusions here, but you can't possibly be comparing this team to the one who went to the WORLD SERIES, are you?
If you are, you have completely lost your mind.

No, not at all. The 2008 bunch has the following problems, as you've outlined yourself:
- Only one veteran starter
- Only one young starter who has really turned the corner in the first half of the year
- No middle relief
- No reliable closer
- The third baseman is carrying the team
- A young, gifted outfielder with poor plate discipline who swings at everything and frustrates us.
- Having to look up at a team with two of baseball's best sluggers.
- Not even being in 2nd place to look up at that team.
- Looking up at a team with a nice mix of young and veteran starters, led by one of baseball's best pitchers under the age of 25.
There are no similarities whatsoever, are there?

You can make that same argument with last years team with the exception #1 and maybe #5, and look what happened....oh, another season of just being a somewhat decent team, no playoffs, and a middle of the pack finish.
But, you can keep making arguments, I can do this all day my friend.

I like your points, I have already seen several instances where this team reminds me of the 1991 Braves and the 2005 Braves teams. This team has tremendous talent and hopefully, the injury bug is biting us early during the first half of the season and when the all-star break gets here, we should get Tom Glavine, Mike Hampton, Rafael Soriano, and Martin Prado back. I see no reason to be worries right this second, none of the teams ahead of us scare me. The Phillies are 1-7 in their last 8 and have lost 5 straight. The Marlins are living on credit and their pitching will eventually fail them, they also make a lot of errors. The Mets are no better than a .500 team and let's not even mention the Nationals. I think we are the cream of the crop in this division and if we would have had a couple things go our way earlier this season, we'd be sitting on top of the division right now.

It was not as easy to band wagon for one back then. If you were a Braves fan then you had seen worse than 38-38.
EVERYBODY expected the Braves to fold and usually they obliged.
I do agree that you are correct in not giving up on them at this point--WAY TO EARLY to be changing--- say an avatar to a bag with an A on it !!
I think the constant grousing will always be here. I enjoyed your post-- keep the faith!!
