This US Open, with Rocco, Tiger's knee, the drama on 18, Tigers double bogeys and eagles and everything else that happened, could very well go down as one of the greatest sporting events of our young century and that was the best you could do? I admit I only read about half of it, because I had found a Mad Magazine of mine from twenty years ago and decided to read it instead figuring it would be more intellectually gratifying, but I can't imagine the article got any better. Brutal. I'll assume the editors rubber stamped everything because it was fathers day and they were watching the tournament.

I agree.  I would normally tend to rank Travis in the top half of writers on this site.  However, this article was very poor.  It doesn't nearly do justice to the high-quality U.S. Open we just saw.

I loved the article.  I thought it ws funny as hell.

For the last five days I have been reading how serious this tournament was  Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the drama, the competitiveness and tension of the play,  I also enjoyed reading the serious recounting and analysis of the events.  But, there is humour in everything.  The author was able to find a slice of it.  It's cool to walk on the lighter side occassionally.

I have to disagree with your assessment of the article.  I found it highly entertaining.  Normally I'm not a big fan of the "what celebrity/sports figure X is thinking" humor, but as an avid golfer and who occasionally plays competitively I find the article rings absolutely true.  I can't count the number of times I've had to congratulate my competitors on a well played bunker shot or a clutch put while screaming inside as the shot effectively ended my chances of victory, or having to turn and rummage through my golf bag in an attempt to hide my smile while their tee shot on 18 sails twenty yards off line in an all square match in an effort to display my best sportsmanship as is expected in golf.

I imagine Rocco (who definitely won me over as a fan during this championship) had many thoughts that were very much like those written above during those last holes...and probably some more during the playoffs yesterday as well.  Though I also believe that he genuinely was happy for Tiger when he sank that putt on 18 even though I'm sure a "why can't he just freaking miss that putt" was running through his head.

But I do hope there will be much written in more "serious" forums regarding what an incredible Open Championship this actually was.

If there's ever a time when a golf event goes down as one of the greatest sporting events of the century, feel free to shoot me. I thought that you had to actually be a sport before you could be classified as a sporting event.

Senoy,

If you could just let the rest of us out there in the world who are not as West Virginian educated as you are of which things we call "sports" are actual "sports" it would greatly help us all. In fact, I'm sure all of the networks, websites, and everything else that cover sports would love for you to claify this for them. I imagine there is quite a bit of egg on the face of all the people at Sports Illustrated and ESPN right now. For years they were calling golf a sport when you, the clear expert in the field, have decided it is not.

Let me guess this too, Tiger is not an "athlete" either. If you could just be so kind as to inform us all of what the parameters are for qualifying as a sport or athlete, I am sure the rest of us readers would find your enlightenment very worthwhile. Is baseball a sport? I mean, golfers do about as much sweating and physical exertion as relief pitchers and DH's. I'm sure football is, but what about the kicker or the punter? Bowling? Tennis? Horse racing? Car racing?

Just let us know. And, since I can only assume from your previous comments that you are about as sharp as a marble, the WWF is fake, so I don't think it should make your list of "actual sports" either.

I have to disagree with you, as well.  If you want to read a serious article regarding yesterday's events, you don't even have to try to find one - they're everywhere.  After reading article after article regarding the intense and compelling drama that was yesterday's playoff, it was actually a nice change of pace to read something that was able to take a step back and find a little humor in the whole thing.
