Pgh -- I think you hit the nail on the head, particularly with the interference penalties. As in any sport, many of these calls rely solely on the judgment of the official making the call. That kind of judgment is subjective. And the rules are set up to rely on that judgment.
That is what allows a fan from one team to say, "Hooray, officials!" to a specific call, while a fan from another team wants to murder the official for making that same call. And the fan's interpretation most often boils down to whether the call gives there team an advantage, unless it is so egregious or so obvious, no disagreement is possible (e.g., the Hudler high stick in Game Five). That's just human nature.
And as we've seen in this series, there have been disagreements even among the officials on some calls. That makes them look REALLY good! Looking at it this way. the NHL definitely has some work to do.
That's not even to mention penalties that fans "see" and officials "miss," either because they weren't "on the scene," or because they decided to let players "play on" without making the call. Again, consistency is key, and fans will be the first ones to jump on this.
It's like the old saw about how 12 different people at an accident scene or crime scene give 12 different descriptions/stories of what happened and/or what they saw. A different story is almost inevitable.
Just about 12 hours 'til game time now. Tonight's colossal collision should be great!
GO, Red Wings!!
