Is it just me or does anyone else think the Pens defense is giving the Wings too much respect and backing off too much? I swear that Rob Scuderi backed his way totally out of the play when Franzen scored his goal the other day. I've read others say that Franzen put a great move on Rob but I didn't see it. What I saw was more of the same crap I've been screaming at my television about the whole series. They're letting the Red Wings carry the puck into our zone unchecked far too much times with the D-men halfway to the goal line screening Fluery more than impeding the Wings! Once Detroit gains the offensive zone their excellent stickhandling and passing are wearing the Pens out . Then when we do gain possession we throw it out to mid-ice where they just carry it back in!

What I feel they should be doing is have the defenceman play a bit tighter and then the forwards will have a better shot at backchecking. With one Penguin forward always in the middle to cut off cross-ice passes and one on the puckhandler, even if they get past the defenceman the forwards can continue to pressure the puck and the man in the middle can continue to cut off the passing lanes! Isn't this what we were doing earlier?

PghOldhead,

I agree, for the first time in this years playoffs the Penguins defense looks like they did against the Senators last year when they lost in 5 games.  They are on their heels way too much, Rob Scuderi, Kris Letang, Hal Gill, Ryan Whitney and recently Darryl Sydor look to be playing that way.  Sergei Gonchar and Brooks Orpik seem to be the only ones that are attacking in their own zone.  Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk are the only two Red Wings that I would show that much respect to. Tomas Holmstrom and Johan Franzen are beasts in front of the net but neither are that good at handling the puck they don't need to respected like the other two I mentioned.  The Pens need to attack the puck more often and stop the Red Wings second short pass.  The Red Wings strong point is two quick passes to carry it into the neutral zone and the Pens defense needs to cut off that second option by staying with the play, not backing up.

What I saw in games 1 & 2 was the D backing out of the offensive zone to early.  If you have no one at the point that cuts down on your options.  I did not notice to much in game 3.  I'm not saying it was Kris Letang.  I don't think it was,  but as a team defense it improved.

As for the defense giving up to much ground in their end.  I feel the best way to stop that is have a forward flying back to pick up their forward if the D-man steps up and his hit gets side stepped.  If you don't have the forwards backchecking 100%  then if you step up for the hit and miss the puck & player then hes got a free path to the net.  Without  the backchecking I'ld say your best bet is to force him wide.

On Johan Franzen goal the good moves I thought were on Marc-Andre Fleury after Rob Scuderi already took himself out of the play.

KILLERPGH, the Denfenceman doesn't have to hit the opponent, he can just pokecheck  or just generally harass him enough so the backchecking forward can be that much more effective. In other words, stay between the puck and Fluery but slow 'em down and don't give the Wings so much room.

Watch some reruns if you can or just keep in mind what I'm saying during game 4. In my opinion if the Pens keep backing off so much, they don't stand a chance because it plays right into the Red Wings hands!

oldhead you are 100% right.  I was yelling and screaming during game 3.  I remember 1 instance where Dan Cleary was coming in 1 on 3 Penguins and was allowed to just skate over the blue-line like it was warm ups.
