- Our offensive line this year is going to be almost completely different than it was last year

- That QB has also only been in the league for 3 seasons and played injured in two of them.  It is not like Alex Smith has been in the league for like 5-7 years and never done anything.  He doesn't even have two full years of starting experience (only 30 games)

- Decent right now but he has the potential to be great and showed a lot of improvement last season

- Even if he is playing injured and he has no help around him he is still great which is why he was 6th in the NFL in yards from scrimmage last year

- Didn't I already go over this?  Bruce put up better numbers than any 49er receiver last year and Johnson has better career numbers than our leading receiver last year

Our offense is going to be ranked in the late teens at worst and I'd bet my life on that

3 years is longer then a lot QBs with his numbers get.

Brian Griese pops to mind.

Thanks. I saw these shirts when I was in Hawaii, and have been pretty down that I didn't buy them for me and the cousins while I was there.

I could get them on-line but they were selling them 2 for $15 in Hawaii

What?  How does Brian Griese compare at all to Alex Smith?  Griese was a 3rd round draft pick that playing in a pro-style offense for three seasons as the starter in college and was drafted by a great team.  He then was pretty good in his first three seasons, including a Pro Bowl appearance in 2000, as a starter after he spent a year on the bench learning from John Elway.

Alex Smith played in a spread offense in college for only one full season as the starter and was drafted by a historically bad team.  He then was horrible in his first season after spending less than half of  a season on the bench learning from the greats Tim Rattay and Cody Pickett.

Not only do they have nothing in common but, like I already said, anyone judging Smith should throw out his rookie season as no QB would have done well in that situation and the fact he was only 21 years old.  Taking that away we have only 22 games to judge him by, in three of which he was playing with a seriously injured  shoulder.  Take out those three games and he is 9-10 as a starter with a 17 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.  Even if you include them he is 9-13 with 18 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.  By no means are either of those good but they are decent considering what he has had to work with

You're right...Brian Griese is was too good to be compared with Alex Smith....Smith has been more like JP Losman...suppose to be good...but has shown no signs of it at all...

I just dont see why if Smith and Gore stay healthy you team will be soo much better..they were both healthy in 2006 and you were only 7-9...theres absolutely no reason to believe you will be anything better then that this season...

Im sorry I have no pity for him playing with a hurt shoulder...Matt Hasselbeck played the entire 2006 season with a torn labrum and still lead his team to the 2nd round of the playoffs...with half of the team around him also hurt that season....

Face it Alex Smith hasn't shown that he can lead a successful NFL team...and there is no evidence out there that says he can....

It is not so much a comparison as it is to say, here is a QB with far better numbers that after 4 seasons with the Broncos was shipped off to Miami.

How about Tim Couch. He was a number 1 pick with number similar or better then Smith who half way through his 5th season, was removed as the Starter and hasn't played a game since.

David Carr, much better numbers then Smith. After 5 season the Texans got rid of him but was pretty much considered a bust after 3 season.

Rick Mirer, had number similar to Smith and was yanked out of the starters role mid-way through his 4th season.

Joey Harrington, Byron Leftwich, Kyle Boller, ect....

All guys with number similar or better then Smith through their first 3-4 season all left for busts.

The point is how many years does Smith get to prove he was worth a #1 pick?
