This is a poll with absolutely no right or wrong answer. Who do you think was the best team to finish second in the polls? I did not include teams who won a split title. I only went back to 70' with the exception of Ole Miss in 59'. I had to be a homer. The Ole Miss team did go 10-1 and beat LSU in the Sugar Bowl 21-0 after losing to them in "Death Valley"7-3 on Halloween when Heisman winner Billy Cannon returned a punt 90 yards for the winner. Including that punt return they allowed only 21 points for the entire season! For the poll I will take 71' Oklahoma for had they not lost the "game of the century"to Nebraska they might have been considered the greatest team ever.

If you voted for Bama in 77' you guys did get royally screwed. You played the toughest schedule in the country-Nebraska and USC both on the road , you destroyed Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl and get jumped by 5th ranked Notre Dame and you were second. ND lost to Ole Miss for christ sakes, a team that Bama pummeled.

1966 Alabama.

Started the season ranked number 1 and were 2 time defending national champions. Alabama was a dominate team. The Tide finished 1966 on a 20-game unbeaten streak and outscored its opponents 267-37. Seven wins were by more than 20 points; six wins were by shutout.   Voters mysteriously decided to put both MSU and ND ahead of the unbeaten Tide late season and they faced off in their bowl.  Instead of trying to go for the win the coward Ara Parseghian, the coach of ND, decided to run the clock out in the final minutes to a 10 - 10 tie.  Meanwhile Alabama proceeded to destroy Nebraska 34-7 in the Sugar Bowl to finish the season the only unbeaten/untied team.  Yet, most voters resided in the northeast at the time still decided to give a split championship to ND - MSU.  Perhaps the greatest injustice ever in college football.

It was the media elite getting back at Bama for the south's social injustices. The funny thing is that Notre Dame had just one black player on their team in 66'-Alan Page. Not saying anything about ND, just a little irony.

I do not feel sorry for '77 Alabama, they lost to 9-3 Nebraska.  Notre Dame pounded number one ranked Texas in the bowl game too.

1994 PSU should have gotten a chance and they were a very very good football team.  2004 Auburn should have gotten a shot and they were a very good football team also.  I say those teams are the best number twos.

Ole Miss Fan,

Got to with Tide Pride on this one.  Great football team.  That tie cost Bama and they were pretty awesome.   My 66 UGA team wasn't shabby at 10-1 with Jake Scott, George Patton and Bill Stanfill.  A one point loss at Miami hurt us.  But got to go with that Bama team.

Auburn in 04 because that should not happen in this day.   I don't think they would have beaten USC, but I am convinced that it would have been a much better game.

Thanks for making me feel young OMF91.   I will abstain since almost half of the choices were before my birth.
