OK, there's whispers of a shake-up sooner rather than later. So this once again is a gathering spot for hot stove rumors.

This from Jayson Stark at ESPN sets the tone:

EYES ON SAN DIEGO: Here's one AL executive's nomination for a club that could go into early selling mode: The Padres. "The vibes we're getting is that they already know it's not happening for them this year," the exec said. "So they may be the first team that tries to be opportunistic." Among the Padres the shoppers figure to keep their eye on: Khalil Greene, Kevin Kouzmanoff (to open third base for Chase Headley), Randy Wolf and any bullpen arms the Padres would talk about.

From Toronto Globe & Mail

Jayson Stark says there are rumblings that the San Diego Padres are about to start unloading players so I'm keeping an eye on shortstop Khalil Greene, and so should you. Greene went to the Padres with the 13th pick overall in the 2002 draft, on the selection immediately before the Blue Jays chose Russ Adams. General manager J.P. Ricciardi is on record as saying the team would have chosen Greene if he was available. Greene is an everyday shortstop, something the Blue Jays don't have. He'd also bring a touch of athleticism and energy to the offence (I'm not certain how he measures on the Johnny Mac-David Eckstein Grit-O-Meter, but I saw him get his jersey dirty once in a playoff game and I'm told he's “a good guy.”)

From the Braves mailbag at MLB.com

If the Padres continue to struggle in the NL West and Mike Hampton can't get his injury problems solved, could we see Greg Maddux in a Braves uniform again after the All-Star break?
-- Mike S., Columbus, Ga.

It didn't necessarily mean anything, but when I was asking some of the team's management and players if they felt they were seeing Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz in uniform together for one last time last week, I kept getting the, "You never know what might happen" response.

Like I said, this didn't exactly mean anything. But at the same time, it provided the reminder that you should never say never. If the Braves found a way to trade for Maddux, they would be doing so because they felt he could help and not just to create a nice story.

Based on the way he's pitching, Maddux is still capable of helping the Braves and every other Major League team. He has posted a 2.52 ERA in his past four starts. His only bad outing came on April 18, when he resumed his career-long struggles against the Diamondbacks. In his other eight starts this year, he's posted a 2.30 ERA.

Obviously something needs to happen. Building for the future hopefully includes keeping the Khalil Greene and Kevin Kouzmanoff types. Young, and lots of up-side potential.

If the Padres trade either one of them for "prospects", there would be a bad backlash by the fans and local media.

Go Friars

Greene is 29 and has been a starter for four years. By this age and with that amount of service you know what to expect, so barring a PED cycle I don't think we can bank on his up-side potential.

He is either unwilling or unable to work on his plate discipline and over his last 776 ABs (this year and last year combined) has struck out 4 times as much as he has walked. With two strikes he is helpless against the outside breaking ball out of the zone. Lifetime OBP = .307.

The only reasons to keep him are his acceptable defense and the fact that we have no one in the minors who could pass for a major league SS. Hoping that he will improve on his weaknesses just isn't going to happen IMO.

If we can get a good trade for him where we obviously win the trade... we should do it.

Really well said about Greene, it's so true once he gets 0-2 its over.

He is a fan favorite though and people would have a problem with trading him.  But at this point I think any fan that really cares about the team would understand the situation and the need to try to get something for him while they can before he ruins his remaining trade value.
