This has absolutely nothing to do with Panthers football! However, I feel like you guys are my family and I can ask some questions. My son will be entering his third year in pee-wee football. He has played the last two seasons at MLB, and DE. He is only 82lbs and 9yrs old. However, he has recorded 16 sacks in 14 games and has forced six fumbles in two seasons. That is pretty impressive considering some of his 9 yr old competition is 150 lbs or better! He is a monster! I look at him and see Dan Morgan in the way he attacks people!

Now the problem is I have been working on his recieving and throwing. He threw me a 30 yard bomb today that actually stung the hell out of my hands! I am so proud of my son, but I have no idea what to work with him on! Is he defense or offense? He wants to be a QB, but pee wee football looks for runners at Qb and he isn't one of those. What do I tell this kid and what do I develop? He is going to be special...but I am at a loss as far as things go! I would appreciate any advice!

you dont need to specialize him at that age. it would proly be very beneficial to him to try out everything, develop all sorts of skills, and figure out later what he will be best at. give him a good base just as a football player. teach him how to throw, catch, tackle, attack, all the good stuff. at that age, pretty much the only things that matter are:
1) he develops a love for the game
2) he begins to understand how to train hard and smart.
what he trains for now will very likely not end up being what he excels at later on in his career(just look at all the guys out of high school who play different positions in college, or who are just labeled "athlete" cux they dont have a real position). right now, let him do what he wants as long as he is learning skills thatll make him a better athlete.

personally, id keep him on D. defense takes a mentality that cant be taught by a coach, and itll help him to get that toughness while he is growing up. any sissy can play offense. if he ends of deciding he wants to play on offense, hes got lots of time to pick up those skills.
im lookin forward to seein the next beaston or Chris Harris.

Ty...I appreciate the comments and you are right! I don't push him in one direction or the other; however, he is a holy terror on defense! I don't think he liked the game when he first got in it; however, after he got good and pissed off...I know he loves the game now! He gets to smack guys twice his size in the mouth! Having children is truly heaven on earth!

Michael, do now develop him into anyone position or speciality at this age.  Let the game come to him, his strenghts will develop in time and he will start leaning to a position as traits develop. As an old coach, this is what I would suggest.

The thing to teach and work on at this age may seem boring to him, but they are skills that will help him grow and excel in the future.

They are as follows:

Footwork drills that will teach him to move sideways, backwards and forwards.  Agaility drills like running through tires  picking up his knees.

Passing for distance and accuracy ( use a tire on a rope).

Punting and kicking the ball.

Catching the ball standing still and running to all directions ( right, left, forwards and backward).

The most important thing to teach him at this age is cheerleader watching and the do's and dont's of this well known art.

Make sure he is a Panthers fan and do not let ny Falcons get close to him.

Good luck and Go Panthers.  !!!

mlf...let everything come to him...he is so young and will have so many coaches over the next several years(with new coaches come new ideas)...by high school he should be more set in what to focus on...if he is like my child was he will change his mind about 25 more times before he KNOWS what he wants to focus on...

He will soon start filling out...how that progresses will determine quite a bit. He is a little early for the weight room but that time will be here before you know it. By the time he is in middle school, time in the weight room during off season will pay dividends big time.

Encourage him to have fun and be competitive..from the starting of the game (practice or whatever) until it is over...the score should always be zero zero.

I would also be looking at any "camps" in your area...they also will help him...and you. He is not too young to attend these.

Enjoy watching the games on Saturday's and Sunday's with him...priceless.

And lastly, make sure he is a Panthers fan...for life.

at only 9 i say teach him all everything you know about football and let him pick a spot, teach him blocking, passing, catching, how to run and what elbow should be up and down while receiving handoffs, but the most important one is teaching him how to be a team player. coming from someone of a small town, i played guard and d tackle and i was only 5' 11" 235 and i lead my team with the most pancakes and most sacks, and only one div a school was looking at me. yes it was north carolina they thought i would make a good fullback, and we did some 40 times and squid and press brench( at the summer of 1999 kevin turner camp, i was voted the best athelete there. the first time they ever give out that award). but the head coach got replaced in 2000, so i ended up trying out for bloomsburgh as a walk on and it was right after they won the div 2 champs, and i got cut befor we even put pads on.  so, i just played rugby. coming from a small town sucks.

Wow! This is why I LOVE Panther nation! You guys with all of your insight has been great! I tend to question myself ( like any good parent should) about the likes and dislikes of my children. It's nice to know that I am not pushing my kid too hard and letting his skills take off! I appreciate all of the info from everyone on here..and like I said..this is why I love the Panthers fan base! Great people and fantastic advice! letsgopanths...it really sounds like you had something going for you. It's like I tell my son though...you are one really bad grade from being a nobody on the football field or one bad coaches mistake! Excel at everything you do in life and no matter what...you will make your mark in history! Go Panthers!

MLF,

Congrats on having a talented son and enjoy every minute you have to spend with him because life goes by so fast and before you know it he will be playing for the Panthers. I ditto the remarks made by tyellington and firstchance although I feel it is not to early to start weight training just doesnt need to be a Lou Ferrigno at this point and stage. As he gets older he might also find out it is better to hit than to be hit especially as the competition gets even bigger. Enjoy
