This question is obviously directed at those of you who support high major universities from big conferences...aaaaaaand Memphis.
What are your feelings towards players who have played at your school for only one season...before bolting to the NBA? Are they looked upon as being just as big a part of "the family" as others who stayed longer...or are they simply viewed as being an extremely talented player who happened to have a 1 season cup of coffee at your school?
Obviously, one would assume that the amount of TEAM success that occured during that one season would be an enormous determining factor in terms of how fans feel about a particular "one & done" player. For instance, I would imagine that Carmelo Anthony is beloved across the board by Syracuse fans.
Eric Gordon at Indiana...Derrick Rose at Memphis...Kevin Durant at Texas...Kevin Love at UCLA, Greg Oden at Ohio State...etc., etc., etc.
What are your feelings towards these and other "one & done" players?

Shawn Marion played for one season here at UNLV. And while I follow what he does in the NBA, and DO consider him a Runnin' Rebel, I certainly don't regard him with the same level of fondness that I do Stacey Augmon, Greg Anthony, Armon Gilliam, Wink Adams, etc.

I want one on my team every year. They may not have the lengthy history on your team that four year players do, but with the NBA age limit rule, you're going to need them to compete.
I love Eric Gordon for what he did for us last season and am glad he became a Hoosier. He's not going to be on my list of all time favorites, but that may be due to our tournament results last year. Jared Jeffries is on my list and he only played two seasons. Ditto Keith Smart.

Syracuse got Carmelo Anthony for 1 year, result ncaa crown. Enjoyed every minute of his stay, and wish he could have stayed longer---who knows if we would have won any more or not, but I can understand why someplayers feel the pull of the nba and their money. For some hoops is a game and for others it is a way out of poverty and thug life that comes from living in the inner city (yes that is a large generalization). Would I prefer to see the kids get an education and then go, absolutely!!!! But thats a white bread middle class attitude (also one Bill Cosby shares) and I cannot image turning down millions of dollars to play a game for a college eduction.

These guys are just playing within the confines of a ridiculous rule. If a school wants to get a hired-gun to win at basketball - they're within their rights too.
When I mention Villanova players (that went into the NBA) - I think of guys like Doug West and Randy Foye - not Tim Thomas or Michael Bradley - they don't count - they aren't alumni.
When Kyle Lowry's profile appears on the TV screen (which has got to be a rare event), I would prefer it to read "College: None" and not give him any affiliation.
(Yes - ll the guys I mentioned left before the one-and-done rule. But the sentiment still applies)

Travis Bice was here for a few seasons, and played on the 1990 NCAA championship team. He might have been the skinniest human being ever. He was about 6'-4", 6'-5", and weighed maybe 155 lbs. But he could absolutely shoot the lights out from long range...beautiful, text book jump shooter. Of course, he couldn't create his own shot, and wasn't much of a defender, but he was a teriffic pure shooter.
Anderson Hunt was kinda like that Green kid from Florida. He left simply because Johnson, Augmon, Anthony, and Ackles were leaving. Of course those guys were seniors. Hunt was a junior. Had he returned for his senior season, Tarkanian was going to have him play the point. With improved passing and ball handling skills, Hunt would have played in the NBA.
But he chose instead to leave UNLV a 6'-1" shooting guard with mediocre ball handling and passing skills. Oh well...he's still one of my favorite Runnin' Rebels.

You are absolutely correct reguarding skill level and the ability to play in the nba. Melo was ready, LeBron and Kobe were ready. But there are many more one and done players that just ride the pine for 2-3 years before gaining the experience and skill level to play in the nba. Why not complete your PAID for education and then get to the nba with some (non-basketball) intelligence and actual skills. Our one and done this year, Donte Green, is not ready for the nba judging by his college performance. We will be a pine rider for the next few years and will be collecting the big paycheck.
Lets not even go to Mayo and the pay cut he had to take to go to school. Latest new says he was paid more in high scholl than he was during his one and done year at college.

My thoughts on the one-and-done's and NBA are pretty simple. I honestly don't like it, but if an adult is willing to risk getting injured (and possibly never playing again) in the NBA and losing out on their "guaranteed" millions then so be it.
What happens to the kid if he's got only half an education in this situation? I know this hypothetical is a little far-reaching, but that's just the way my eyes see things.
