He began the season with his fastball in the high 80's, and got worked... then it came back into the 90's, and he had 2 good outings... now he is getting worked again... any hope for the Phillies' reliever-turned starter?

This is so hard to tell, as there is so much going both for and against the guy.  First and foremost, he is a quality starting pitcher.  His main problem though is the gopher ball.  He gives up at least 1 every start.  Here is where the bad part starts, as he pitches his home games in an extreme hitters park, making it all the more likely that he will continue to serve up a blast or 2 each game.

IMO, what he needs to do, somehow, is add a sinker to his arsenal.  Much easier said than done, but that is what will keep him at the "good" level, instead of him ever graduating to "great".

I just can't see him getting too much better in Philly... he relies too heavily on his not-so-nasty fastball...

I would be concerned when a power pitcher loses several mph off of his fastball.

A sinker would be nice. He has a cutter, but he's relying on it too much now and it seems he's become scared of getting killed on his four seam. If he doesn't throw it, it won't get better.

That fastball was nasty as recently as the end of last year when he was closing. I wonder if moving him back and forth has had anything to do with it. I'd think that the winter is plenty of time to swap back, but I guess what do I know?

His best pitch is his 12-6 curve, but without a nice compliment to it he's in big big trouble.

sad to say, but no. trade him as a closer to someone who needs a closer. that's his role now.

thats the best the phils can do. atleast they tried putting him back in the starting rotation.

Catfish, how odd is it to think now that maybe the Phils have too many closers?

Meh. I suppose there may be hope for him yet. It's getting a little late now, but finally even Howard seems to be waking up a little. That ball he hit last night was crushed and it was the same swing we were used to before. Small park my foot. 426 feet is 426 feet.

Side note - what a gem by Hamels last night! Congrats to the kid's first CG and shut out. Way to hold the Bravos to just 4 hits! Of course, hardly anyone in Philly saw it because the Flyers were on. I was rubbernecking at a bar between the screens.

I think that eventually he will figure out what is going on and be a solid starting pitcher again.  His fastball is back up in the 90s which is plenty enough to be serviceable if it has some movement and he hits his spots.  He has a great curve to keep guys off balanced.  Everyone should know that this guy is a head case though and I think his mentality is one of his main problems.  He will get over it eventually and become a good starter if you ask me.  He still has the ability to ring up hitters, so the stuff is there.

Yes, he'll be just fine.  I didn't see anyone panicking when Sabathia had 2 straight games in which he gave up   7+ earned runs.    It happens.  It's still only a quarter way through the season and he has had 2 good games.  Give him some time and stop listening to and absorbing all the WIP says.  Goodness.  How about being worried about Adam Eaton who has ALWAYS been bad.
