Taylor-for-Sheppard trade painful but necessary

ESPN's Chris Mortensen has insinuated it. Agent Drew Rosenhaus has asserted it. Half the Miami fan base is clamoring for it. But it still seems painful for some fans to think that the Dolphins could be parting ways with Jason Taylor.

That being said, the prospect of landing a Pro Bowl cornerback in the prime of his career lessens the blow considerably, and that’s exactly what Lito Sheppard represents.

The Philadelphia Eagles standout has struggled with injuries as of late, missing a total of 15 games over the past three seasons, but it’s hard to dismiss both the consistency of his production as well as his penchant for making game-changing plays. The former Florida Gator has reeled in 16 interceptions over the past four seasons, despite the fact that most NFL quarterbacks choose to throw away from him. Moreover, Sheppard has capitalized on his opportunities, cashing in on three defensive touchdowns that include two interception returns over 100 yards.

Sheppard is the only player in NFL history who can claim that accomplishment.

Bill Parcells and his brain trust were front and center for both of those run backs, in 2004 and 2006, so they are well-acquainted with Sheppard’s playmaking prowess. And though they chose not to select a cornerback in the 2008 draft, they're surely keenly aware of the need for an upgrade at the position and a counterpart for steady veteran Will Allen.

However, what makes this hypothetical deal most attractive is the discrepancy in age between Sheppard and Taylor. Miami’s dancing darling is fast approaching 34 years of age, while Sheppard is just 27.

Truthfully, though, this scenario is only a hypothetical; there is really no tangible evidence that it's going to be consummated. Player-for-player trades are rare in the NFL, and it seems to make little sense for the middle-of-the-road Eagles to acquire an aging veteran in the twilight of his career for a relatively young, elite defensive back.

Still, it’s interesting for fans to entertain the idea of bringing in a proven commodity like Sheppard, even if it means parting with one of the most beloved players and personalities in franchise history.

I like this trade. Would give the Eagles the pass rusher and I would be able to watch him every Sunday while the Dolphins get a pro-bowl CB to go with Will Allen. Plus, we did draft 3 DL's in Phil Merling, Kendall Langford and Lionel Dotson.

You don't even know how much I love Jason Taylor.  Hell, I've watched Dancing With The Stars every week since he's been on it, and I'm not ashamed.

But...

 LET'S MAKE THIS HAPPEN TUNA!

I don't know how the Eagles would feel about this trade idea but it sounds good for the Phins.

I'm sure the Eagles would love it. They have Samuels and Brown and need a pass rusher on the other side of Trent Cole.

Jason Taylor and Trent Cole seems unfair.  Goodell should do something about that if that happens.  That has to be illegal.

Lito Sheppard for Jason Taylor??? I LOVE it. and I say this with JT as one of my favorite Dolphins of all time. He has 2 more years left at this level of play, MAYBE. Lito is clearly in his prime and we have a HUGE need for a true NO. 1 CB, No BS repies about Wil Allen he's nothing more than a adequate no.2 more like a nickel. Great move BIG PHISH.... make it happen.

We didn't draft any secondary help and only signed undrafted free agent, Aaron Lane....Hmmmm....
