Because if the Brewers are going to have to do the 'closer by committee' thing for a little while, that is very hard on a bullpen and they'd like to use a pitcher as much as possible. Basically, it was about saving the bullpen as much as possible. The Brewers don't have played games on 7 straight days and play 6 more games before an off-day. With the back-end of the rotation struggling to go deep into games the way they are, Ned was trying to do whatever he could to minimize the "taxing" effect on his bullpen in a blowout game.
