O.K  I just don't get it. As some of you know I wasn't for drafting McFadden because we have Bush who I believe will be a stud. We took McFadden and that is that. I hope he and Bush become a nightmare for the league. My problem is that before the draft the media never said ONE WORD about Bush. Everybody talked about Fargas and is he really a #1 guy. NOBODY, I mean NOBODY, not even the local media said a word about Bush and they all said we should take McFadden. So we did. I open my paper today (yes I still read the paper) and there is yet another article on how good bush looks. I'll post it on the bottom.  I have seen 2 ESPN reports, 1 on the NFL net, a couple on Comcast sports net and now for the third day in the CCtimes I have seen reports on how good Bush looks. He's smooth, Healthy and quick they say. What gives? Not that McFadden won't be solid but why "after" the draft does all the reports on how good Bush looks comes out. Half of us on this board were talking about how good Bush will be before the draft. Not that it matters now I just find it kind of funny.

ALAMEDA -- Pity the defender who crosses paths with Raiders running back Michael Bush for the first time. Bush is a load at 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds, with a ball in his hands and the goal line in his sights.

Throw in the fact that Bush hasn't played in a game for 20 months, his surgically repaired right leg is healed, and he isn't assured any playing time, and you have the recipe for a player in search of someone to take it out on.

"I've been telling people that my season starts the first preseason game," Bush said Saturday, in reference to the Raiders exhibition game against the 49ers on Aug. 8.

Then again, little has worked out as expected for Bush the past two years. He last played in a football game in Louisville's season-opener against Kentucky in Sept. of 2006. He sustained a broken right leg in that game and missed the rest of the season.

The injury required a second surgery just before the 2007 NFL draft. He dropped from a first-round prospect into the laps of the Raiders with the first pick of the fourth round. The running back-rich Raiders kept Bush out of practice for most of last season and he didn't play in any games.

Why risk another setback, especially when veterans LaMont Jordan, Dominic Rhodes and Justin Fargas were on the roster? Bring him along slow, and then turn him loose this season. So went the thinking.

A breakout season by Fargas coupled with the Raiders' selection of running back Darren McFadden with the fourth pick of the NFL draft last month scuttled the original plan.

"At first, I was like why do we need another back?" Bush admitted in a news conference Saturday.

Ultimately, Bush decided to do what he has become quite adept at doing of late, making the best of a less-than-ideal situation.

"I just want to get on the field and just play," Bush said. "Special teams, I'm all down for anything, just being on the field and getting the atmosphere. I'm just ready."

Bush's readiness no longer is in question. He runs at full speed, makes sharp cuts, catches the ball in traffic, and blends in seamlessly. It's his worthiness to play ahead of Fargas and McFadden that clouds his future.

Fargas rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season and received a sizable new contract during the offseason. McFadden is a first-round pick on the verge of receiving a contract that should net him at least $20 million guaranteed over five years or so.

Naturally, Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said none of the aforementioned factors go into the equation.

"We'll open the competition up," Kiffin said, "and who knows? Michael Bush may be the best of the three."

If that sounds like the company line, then perhaps you'll find value in running backs coach Tom Rathman's assessment of the team's muddled running backs situation.

"Our philosophy is, it doesn't matter what you've done in the past," Rathman said.

Therefore, Fargas' 1,009 yards rushing, McFadden's high-profile status, Jordan's fall from grace -- he likely will be cut before this season -- and Bush's false start mean nothing anymore. It's, "What-have-you-done-for-me-lately and what-can-you-do-for-me-this-season time?"

"We have a standard here of the play that we want to present as a group of running backs, and we're going to hold everybody that suits up and steps out on that field to those standards," Rathman said. "When you're not able to get it done to those standards, we're going to go to the next guy. Somebody's going to perform for us, and it's going to be at a high level."

The smart money says Fargas and McFadden split the bulk of the carries, with Fargas the primary ball carrier, and Bush assumes the role of short-yardage/goal-line back.

It might not be what the Raiders or Bush envisioned a year ago but, hey, it beats what both experienced last season.

It also helps Bush that he has been in a similar situation before. At Louisville, he spent time backing up Eric Shelton and Lionel Gates before he assumed the lead role.

"Everybody just complements each other," Bush said.

Why not have multiple backs.

Fargas is not the answer he already has wear and tear on him, so he is not the longterm answer. DMC is the answer, he is the future of our franchise.

Worst is we can trade Fargas or Bush in a year or two (If DMC is the real deal) and get alot for them. We've seen how Backups get loads of cash (LaMont Jordan coming from NYJ and Michael Turner for SD.) So lets say down the line we can trade 1 of them for some picks.

Its never a problem to have too many backs.

Bush is too talented to be a short yardage back. He has great hands. I think we should have alot of 2 RBs in the backfield with Bush and DMC because both are great pass catchers out of the backfield and we can even line either ofc them up at slot reciever.

So Fargas should get the bulk of the carries in the I formation while Bush and DMC should be in SpiltBacks formation (Madden).

I dont want Jamarcus to throw the ball over 20 times a game. Why not rely on our best asset in our RBs i hope to run the ball 35 plus times a game. I just hope our defense can get alot of turnovers so we can rack up the Yards for our RBS

Why couldn't bush be the future?

So lets say down the line we can trade 1 of them for some picks.

No way. You took Dmac and you don't want to kill him. Trade Fargas if you want but not Bush. Bush and Dmac could kill in this league.

Bush is too talented to be a short yardage back. He has great hands. I think we should have alot of 2 RBs in the backfield with Bush and DMC because both are great pass catchers out of the backfield and we can even line either ofc them up at slot reciever

Mancini I agree and I'm not saying that Dmac is a bad pick. I just find it funny that nobody said a word about Bush (in the media) and they all said take MCfadden and now they all are talking about how good Bush (and McFadden) look.  Do you think that maybe if the "experts" at ESPN or Nfl net would have pumped up Bush before the draft and talked of how good he will be for the Raiders that the Raiders would have taken McFadden? I mean it's Al's call and I'm sure he still would have drafted Dmac but a stronger case for Dorsey, Ellis or C long would have been made if the "expert" talked about Bush being a huge part of the run game. I bet more mock drafts would have had us taking a DT or DE and not McFadden. Just wondering that's all. I love the 2 back look we could have with Bush and McFadden. If both are what they say then we would never loose a step when either come in. I'm just wondering why nobody would talk about Bush when after we took him last year everybody was calling him a steal and in a year the Raiders will have a top RB in the league in BUsh. Now that year is here and everybody (in the media) just forgot. What's done is done and I'm getting more excited every day about the Bush / McFadden back field. That's all.

Bush will get plenty of playing time about 6 games in when Fargas comes out on his usual injury thing. After Fargas goes IR, then McFadden and Bush tandem , Fargas will become the forgotten Raider and the new era of youth and talent will begin.

No one talked about how good Bush looked because he wasn't on the field.  I don't even believe he was practicing with the team last year when he said he was healthy and ready to play.  This camp is the first time anyone has seen him at least practicing.  No one has seen film on what he can do for two years.

He was talked about last year as a possible steal in the draft, and as high as I am still on him, as are many of you, he hasn't seen a single snap in the pros.  No one in the media was sure about him, i don't think it is any more than that.

I get this sneaky suspision that Bush is gonna be a beast.

When we play teams this year, I can actually see us running the split backs with Mcfadden/Bush. Just think about how horrifying to the opposing D it could be. Pre snap both lined up 5 yards deep. Suddenly Mcfadden goes in motion.

The Line backers slide right to protect against him. The ball is snapped Jamacrcus goes back to pass the D is keyed on DMAC, The DE's have they're ears pinned back for the sack. WHAT its a screen (or delay) to Bush for a big gain.

That is an extreamly leathal back field that I get the feeling is going to destroy the AFC west this year.

I hope we dont just play a vanilla rotation plan with them.

R8DRNTN: i share your optimism towards Michael Bush, however, I don't blame the Raiders for drafting McFadden (anymore), even with Bush on the roster. Would we have had a good rushing attack with the trio of Fargas, Rhodes & Bush? yes and it would have cost us a lot less money. I think the Raiders had something else in mind when they drafted this kid. touchdowns. You have to be able to score points to win in the NFL and even though Fargas led the team in rushing despite not coming in as the season starter, he hasn't scored many TD's. DMC & Bush can catch balls and throw balls, giving them a little more potential than Fargas, plus they are younger. You can't simply bank on the fact that Bush will be a beast, even though many of us feel that we will be one. He hasn't proven anything yet, that's the problem. He has just as good a chance to get re-injured as he does to tear up defenses.

It also helps Bush that he has been in a similar situation before. At Louisville, he spent time backing up Eric Shelton and Lionel Gates before he assumed the lead role.Bush shouldn't feel too insulted. Fargas & McFadden are way better than Shelton & Gates! He'll get to prove his worth. I think he'll surprise a lot of people in that first preseason game against the 49ers!
