The only thing we can do about Thome is to " ride the storm out" . I keep saying this,but I'll repeat it because no one is getting it. Thome is going no place. No NL team would want him because, yes you guessed it, no DH in National League!
Also, Griffgog, where is Konerko in your plans? He's another one that won't be going anywhere, he is terrible at the plate. It seems like he has no clue what the pitcher is going to throw him next. No one is interested in Konerko, right now, he would have to look better at the plate and start hitting, then no one on this board would want to see him traded!
I am very dubious about the teams chances to compete....

Did someone hijack your computer? You sound like, well, me. For months I've been trying to convince White Sox fans with blinders that Paul Konerko did NOT slump in 2007 - he had what can mostly be described as a career average year...and at his age, his performance trend would be worse, not better. I also spent months trying to convince the same fans that Jim Thome was way on the wrong side of 35, and would likewise not be putting up good numbers.
I then lambasted KW for making the Nick Swisher trade - essentially trying to "win now" on a team that instead should have been dynamited and rebuilt. Now, KW is going to reap what he has sown. Konerko will get better than what he is doing, sure, but don't be surprised if he ends up hitting .245-.255 with 25-30 HRs...and then gets worse each year until we're out from under his contract. As for Thome, at least when he strikes out, he can't hit into a double play. Swisher would be a valuable contributor on a contending team (at age 27 and given his performance history, he is going to improve), but giving up three prospects for him was the wrong move for this team.
Carlos Quentin is a great find. KW gets a ton of credit for that. Also, Gavin Floyd looks decent, and even Contreras looks okay. John Danks looks like he is developing into a legitimate major league pitcher. The bullpen still worries me. Nick Masset and Ehren Wasserman are terrible. Scott Linebrink has looked good...but is he going to look good in year 3 of that contract? Year 4? Octavio Dotel has been better lately...but I still have to hold my breath every time he comes into a ballgame.
In short, DJ, you've done a 180-degree turn on your previous positions...which is fine, since it basically means you're agreeing with me. =)

I'm forming my own opinion, I'm not necessarily agreeing with anybody. I'm just a frustrated fan lately. You may be right about Konerko, but I still don't understand why he's not doing better, he is only 34. I personally think that one reason Thome's BA is down is because of the shift on him, he has hit some balls that would have found holes thru the infield under the normal positioning. Just my opinion, that being said, he still strikes out to much. Swisher is still young and there is no reason why he can't get better.
Another thing that bothers me is the Cubs are doing well, I hate listening to obnoxious Cubs fans!
Here's a question for you repeat, What team, Cubs or White Sox have won more games during the regular season since 1980 ? How many more? ( approx. )
Anyone reading this thread is welcome to answer my question to repeat......

OK , I only added up the loss column and stopping at 1980 was a good idea because the 70s were uglier for the sox than the Cubs.
WS losses 1980 to today 2357
Cubs losses to today 2368
As a baseball city we have paid the price. I'd compare it to NY but I think that would be pretty ugly.

You are wrong about the numbers of losses. How did you count the losses?
You can't be a White Sox fan if you only have 11 difference, any White Sox fan knows its much more then that. Try coping and pasting to Excel, then let the addition formula do the rest....

I took a 30 year number instead, which means I went to 78 instead of 80, and the numbers are right in that time frame.
You can't be a White Sox fan if you only have 11 difference, any White Sox fan knows its much more then that.

Yes, these are the guys I'm talking about, not 1 of them in the top 100 . Not 1 or Kenny would have traded him already.
I wouldn't put to much faith into Baseball Americas ratings. Didn't they have Joe Borchard as White Sox #1 prospect for about 5 years? Only time in my lifetime the White Sox built the team through their farm system was when they drafted, Ventura, Thomas, Jack McDowell and Fernandez. I think late 80's and early 90's? Players listed in no specific order. In the Kenny Willaims era they have drafed pitchers in the first round, except when they drafted Brian Anderson. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Williams is trying to build a winning team now, not the future. Like it or not. White Sox need to at least try to keep their fan base and compete with the Cubs. He will continue to try and build the team primarily with trades and free agency.
Believe me , you might not like the trades they made, but would like the players they would have put on the field even less, if they didn't make the trades that they did.

The first step of accepting statistical analysis as an extremely valuable tool! It sort of goes: (1) "it can't be true;" (2) "i dont think i get it;" (3) "maybe this stuff has some value;" (4) "this stuff is generally right."
As I have been saying for a long time - Konerko's skill set (slow-footed slugger) ages terribly. 34 is really old for his skill set. I love Konerko. His grand slam in Game 2 in '05 has been replayed about 600 times on my television. That doesn't mean giving him $60M was a smart idea. Look at what the Red Sox do - they dump fan favorites...but just in time. Their fans were mad when they dumped Johnny Damon and Pedro Martinez...but both of those moves were the correct ones, no?

Absolutely right about that, DJ. But he's got to adjust. I don't let him off the hook. I tear my hair out every time - you're telling me a major league hitter (and a good one, at that) can't nudge a little grounder down the third base line? Thome either sucks or is just stubborn.
