This is a disgrace. Not only does a team bat out of order, which is the stuff of Little League, the umps don't even know what to do! And they're veteren umps, too! Good lord.

Randolph pointed it out too early and it took forever to figure this out. But it didnt affect the game but yeah that was a little embarassing for the Reds.

We Reds fans hear everything you guys are saying. It was a disgrace. Although the player who didn't get to bat (Corey Patterson) would have made an out anyway, it was still embarrassing. From now on we are calling Dusty "Busty" because his hiring was such a bust. He knows nothing about baseball and has sucked all the life out of the clubhouse. Walt needs to shake things up.

As I just posted on a related therad, here is the scoop according to Rotoworld:

Though Corey Patterson was supposed to be at the plate, David Ross batted out of order in the ninth inning of an 8-3 loss to the Mets on Sunday.  What is this, Little League? Per MLB rules, Ross has to complete his at-bat to be ruled out, and the outcome of his at-bat is then discarded with no runners allowed to advance. The Mets allowed him to do so, and since he lined out to right there was little harm done. Ross was the batter listed in the order after Patterson, so he was forced to come back to the plate for his 'real' at-bat and Patterson was charged the out. Ross singled after returning to the batter's box. There's almost too many jokes here for us to enjoy. Corey Patterson making outs even when he's not at-bat is just one of them. As if their wasn't already overwhelming evidence that Dusty Baker is a horrible manager, this just adds more fuel to the fire.

leave it to dusty baker to drive a good baseball team strait into the cellar.

i know how hard it is to have a guy like c.pat on your team... its so obvious that a baseball field is the last place he wants to be when he doesn't bat when it is his turn... most players are counting strikes until their next AB just to keep their mind off trying to crush the ball.

I thought that team would contend this year and its nothing against the players or the fans... but the day i heard they hired dusty was a sad day in cinci and the baseball world that a guy like Baker gets another managerial position.

Keep your heads up tho Reds fans... Dusty will manage himself into unemployment, and you guys can get the best out of guys like Votto, Bailey, Volquez, Cueto, and your other prospects.

I saw that today, too.  Just horrible.  But, at least I didn't have to see Patterson hit.  Seeing him hit would be even more painful.

The umpires got it right in the end.  I'm not sure what took them so long to figure that one out.

Actually they didn't get it right. Technically Corey Patterson was out as soon as David Ross flied out, so when he came to bat for the 2nd time there should have been 2 outs. But Randolph just wanted to get the game over I don't think he really cared.
