For a year now, I've listened to people moan and complain about how much we gave up for Weddle (54 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception).
Here are the "remarkable players" the Bears picked up with those draft picks...
2007 2nd round (62nd) Dan Bauzin DE Has yet to enter a regular season game.
2007 3rd round (93rd) Garrett Wolfe RB 31 rushes for a 2.7 ypc average.
2007 5th round (167th) Kevin Payne S 2 total tackles as a SAFETY.
2008 3rd round (90th) Marcus Harrison DT knee injuries and suspensions...
Sure... maybe the Bears did a poor job drafting. Maybe the Chargers would have picked other players. But AJ picked who he wanted and Weddle is a high character guy with versatility.

By now, you would think AJ would be free from critisism given his track record. While it is impossible to hit homeruns every time up, AJ has had more than his share. Weddle seems to be another really good pick.
He has "football insticts" that you can't coach and is always around the ball. He is that rare impact player who makes big plays by being at the right place at the right time and by being able to deliver a big hit. His interception in the Colts game was huge and was impressive.
Is he headed towards stardom? Don't know yet but the early reviews have been pretty good.
As far as trading picks go, a bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush and right now I'm pretty happy with this Weddle Bird.

Those are good players and they met the needs of the Bears. Same goes with Weddle, he met the Chargers needs.
The Bears got more per se, but we didn't need more.
We're both happy. Will find out who got the better deal as time goes on!

I never thought we paid too much for Weddle. I thought we were going to draft him with our number 1. I considered him a number 1 pick.
Buster Davis looked to yummy at the time. Considering Weddle as a number 1, I think we underpaid for him. I see Weddle as a free safety and Clinton Hart as a Strong Safety. We have a very talented secondary. We have a very talented defense in general.
Even if the Chargers could have used those draft picks, would those picks even make the team? The team is deep and talented at every spot except for the Line, which is just talented but not deep.
I am a happy Chargers fan.

Lets all hope Buster lives up to his "yummy" draft position. I for one was on the Weddle bandwagon from the get go, I thought he was a great football player with great instincts and I too thought he could've gone in the first round. He brings a playmaking knack to the secondary that aside from Cromartie was truly lacking. The Bears got a bunch of jags with the picks we gave them and we got a potential difference maker for a potential Super Bowl team. So I say as of now we made a good deal.

Yes. At least 2 safeties were taken after Weddle that appear to be as good, if not better: Tanard Jackson (TB) and Aaron Rouse (GB). The picks he gave to the Bears could have been Fred Jackson CB, or Michael Bush RB, and Ahmad Bradshaw RB or Trumaine McBride CB.
He traded up to #38 to get Weddle, but Gerald Alexander went 61, and appears to be a better player and would have cost less to move up just a few spots to get him. He could have taken Weddle #1 and a different WR with his 2nd round pick - several went in the 3rd round that already look light years better than Davis.
In a few years we will be looking back at this draft class and the ways AJ threw away picks and having regrets.

The only player you mention that has had the same level or slightly better performance perhaps is Gerald Alexander and he was starting. Safetys usually have more tackles than CB's
Eric Weddle rookie season produced 48 tackles, a sack, six passes defensed, an interception and three tackles for loss. In the postseason, he added an interception near the goal line that proved to be a crucial play in the Bolts’ Divisional round win in Indianapolis.
I don't think I'll loose any sleep over this selection. AND I certainly won't regret it.
I know you're a devoted and loyal Chargers fan. Unfortunately you remind me of this fellow I used to work with. He was a good employee and a hard worker. He just complained about everything

Right on Boltnut. Everey post anatnom9 posts seems to be negative, what gives? McCree was starting so Weddle got to cut his teeth in the nickel and dime packages. This year he will be starting and we will see if the other guys that were mentioned are any better.
