Or the 5th spot in the rotation because in no way can you call it Belisle's. I dont think Josh Fogg has quite earned a return trip there even though he's been pretty decent in long relief so far. To me it seems pretty simple, there are 2 alternatives.

Alternative A) Let Jeremy Affeldt take his shot. Why not? The kid has been mad decent so far this year. He throws hard, 97 MPH reached today on the radar gun. He's a lefty. Bill Bray can replace him in the bullpen. And lastly, he can't be any worse than what we've gotten out of our 5th arm so far this year.

or

Alternative B) Bring Homer Bailey up and let's finally just see what he can do in a full season. His recall will mean Belisle would be demoted which I dont really have a problem with. I am tired of waiting to see what Homer Bailey can do and I think we are all in the same boat here. There's nothing left but to throw this kid out there.

I really like the idea of giving Affeldt a shot but again, as stated previously, its time to see what Bailey can do in the majors.

What do you guys think we should do, RIGHT NOW. Right not being the key words.

B.

Jeremy Affeldt he wasn't capable of being a starter in MLB in spring training. He has been successful out of the bullpen so far, but all with only 2 pitches, albeit 2 very good ones. That fastball that runs up around 96 and that hammer curve. Edinson Volquez has been successful so far being a mainly 2 pitch pitcher, but I don't think Affeldt can pull it off. Leave him where he's been successful; the bullpen, and bring up Homer Bailey where he's been successful; the starting rotation. To make room for him we'd either have to DFA or trade Josh Fogg, or demote Matt Belisle. I'd be happy with either.

I love what Jeremy Affeldt has done out of the bullpen, so much I really don't think I'd like to see him out of the bullpen. Plus he has proven when you look back at spring training that this is where he belongs, he just couldn't stretch his pitching past 3 or 4 innings. I think we need to bite the bullet and cut ties with Josh Fogg completely, unless he would be willing to go to AAA. That would move Matt Belisle to the bullpen as Josh's replacement, where he proved a couple of years ago he could be an effective long relief option. I mean that is why he got a shot at starting in the first place, experiment didn't work, sorry Matt back to the 'pen, maybe you'll get another shot. And then I'd agree call Homer Bailey up I don't believe he could possibly do worse than what Fogg and Belisle have given us so far.

I would definately go with Homer.  We already have two young, promising young pitchers playing this year...we're already off to a slow start, why not get his feet wet so we'll definately be consistent with the rotation next year.  Bringing up Bailey will give the offense some breathing room when the fifth spot comes up for a game.  And who knows, our bats get hot maybe we can piece together some streaks, the season is still early. I would love to see a lefty in the rotation BUT in reference to Volquez only having two pitches, his secon pitch is a breaking ball which is delivered as if his fastball and isnt a pitch you can muck up, you have that curve ball hanging all day you have a problem.

Yeah I think all in all, its gotta be Homer Bailey.

1) Because as I already said, its time to see what he's got. Period.

2) I dont think I would wanna take Affeldt out of the bullpen as good as he has been. Plus, the problems we had down there last year, I dont want to be reminded of that from this years group.

3) Corey Patterdoosh sucks. Sorry, I know that has nothing to do with the 5 spot in our rotation but I just can't reiterate that enough.

and

4) Bringing Homer Bailey up and getting even just solid starts out of him might jog something loose in Dusty's melon that hey, maybe these young guys are better than the line of Summer's Eve products I have been running out there. And that just might pave the way for Jay Bruce and for Joey Votto to be playing first base, EVERYDAY no matter what. Yes Hatteburg was good today but seriously, Votto, don't just pencil him in at first, TATTOO him in.

Well, until tonight, I was thinking about the 4 and 5 spots in the rotation. Arroyo definately bought himself some time with his good outing. Belisle has shown me nothing thus far. Bring up Bailey. He has surely earned a promotion and  couldnt possibly do any worse than Belisle or Fogg.

The general problem here so far is that we are asking our No. 5 guy to win games.
Duh?

Well, our ace hasn't gotten enough support to run for mayor of a 1-horse town. Harang is 1-5 ...

Realistically, you want the No. 5 starter to just be "OK" for 5 innings. Sorry, but it's not plausible to expect to win all 5 games through a rotation.

If Harang is 5-1 at this point, the 8-game swing in the record is pretty amazing.
We're just asking a 5-starter to save our butts from a losing streak.

Get Harang some damned runs!

We can maybe win 3 out of 5 in a decent week.

We need to trade Belisle find someone interested and see what we can get for him maybe a top prospect possibly. Affeldt needs to stay in the bullpen. He failed as a starter in the spring and was given another chance  early in the year and that failed as well. Bailey isn't ready to pitch in the bigs yet. Hopefully that will change by the all star break

Bailey isn't ready to pitch in the bigs yet.
How do you figure? He's cut down on his BB rate from years past tremendously, is constantly working deep into games, and has only had one bad outing the whole season. He's ready.
