2008 JUCO SG Tyree Evans commits to MD

OK, something has to be happening with the scholarship availability at MD.  So MD gets Tyree "not to be confused with Tyreke" Evans for 2008.  Apparently, he is a deadly shooter something MD missed this year.  He is nominated for 1st team all-JUCO and is rated by one source as the 8th overall JUCO player this year.  He is 6'3".

Can someone please tell me who's leaving?  This does sound promising for next year though.

1. Apparently Mosley still has not qualified - he needs to pass the ACT or SAT requirement or that scholarship will be available.  

2. There is also the Eric Hayes transfer rumor.

3. There is also the GV to NBA rumor.

Seems like #2 would be the most likely - especially since Evans is a PG/SG combo I believe.   Evans has a very sketchy past - not exactly a character guy for the program.

Can they just take away a current players scholarship?  Would it be a big loss to take back D. Neal's or Dino Gregory's?

This pretty much tells me bye bye Eric Hayes.

The number of scholarships is interesting.  Plus UMD appears to have an immediate need for a front court player that can start or contribute many minutes next year.  They have a number of SG/3G options based on their 4 year recruits and Maze.

It looks like the Terps may be going for greater speed and quickness by recruiting both Maze and Evans.  If Evans can play PG,  the Terps may not have to heavily recruit HS players until the class of 2011.  It doesn't look like a lot of minutes will be available for freshman during 2010 - 2011 season.

Taking away a scholarship, except for misconduct or severe academic problems, is probably not a “signal” you want to send to future recruits --  I'm just being realistic.

GV possibly entering the NBA draft is interesting.  He may wish to refine his on-court decision making skills while he is in college.  His shooting % and number of turnovers (plus watching the games) indicate an issue.  I think he has a good amount of talent but if he wants to go -- I wish him good fortune.

Obviously somebody's got to go...Hayes is never in the gameplan so that automatically defaults him...that sucks though because he really has talent...he can shoot the ball and Gary never uses him...its a shame
