Pads fans,
This season is shaping up to be not so good for the Padres. The "its too early to tell" mantra is a weak excuse...Its becoming "too late" very quickly. Even if things get better the Padres have little chance of making anything of this year. That said, there is some dead weight on the team. Here is my opinion:
1) The entire outfield needs to go...Edmonds may be cut within the next week anyways, but who is the long term answer in CF? Hairston is playing almost every day, but has shown little as a starter. Giles is overpaid for what he produces and is approaching 40 years old and his contract is up after this year.
2) Josh Bard is a good backup but not an everyday producer. He's average behind the plate and has trouble throwing out baserunners, and he has no power at the plate. A high average means little if you arent scoring or driving in runs, he is doing neither of those.
3) Khalil Greene is nice trade bait. Plus, I've never been a fan of his demeanor, it never seems like he even wants to be there. He has produced well offensively for a SS, but he is a tad bit overrated. He strikes out a lot and walks little. I wouldn't mind keeping him, but he can be traded for a few missing pieces.
4) A youth movement is in order... The Padres have enough good prospects to fill holes. They may as well lose this year with young guys getting better rather than old guys getting older. Clean house, trade what you can for prospects and go young. Giles, Greene, even Iguchi can reel in some young talent. Better that than bringing in stars of the past at the tail end of their careers.
Thoughts?

Well if Kalil gets traded, its not like hes going to be happier unless its in Pittsburg. His demeanor is the same since he started here and wont change when he goes. If traded, we gotta get somthing big in trade. Hes going to murder the Padres every time we see him.
Me personally, feel better with a losing season then get rid of players who are franchise guys like Gonazales, Green, Edmonds. J/K . The management knew that we didn't have a big bat, let alone a BAT before the season started. Go Pads!!!!

Loosing Green will be like loosing Ozzie Smith all over again. I agree with you that I would feel better with a losing season than giving up players like Greene or Gonzalez. I would like to see Edmonds and Clark go as soon as possible and not to let the door hit them on their way out but hopefully bring some talent back into the outfield. It kills me to see Cameron and Bradley doing soo well. I know they were problem players but I thought their funk brought some spunk to the plate. Well at least we dont have Andruw Jones!

Do not, I repeat DO NOT trade Khalil Greene. His demeanor has not changed, His bat will perk up. He set a personal record for HR's last year. Oct is right it would be Ozzie Smith all over again. He would come back and hit HR's in Petco on every visit.
Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff are two other players that should be un-touchable. They are the future. Scott Hairston is another player I'd be reluctant to deal. He's about the only bat in the outfield now and he covers center better than any of them.(Edmonds in particular) It's cardiac arrest time when a ball isn't hit right at him.
Any other players are fair game...
The pitching will be fine once they start hitting.

AND I don't agree with your assesment of Brian Giles. His offensive stats are second only to Adrian Gonzalez.
On Base percentage is the highest on the team. 383 which means he's doing his job as leadoff hitter. Lowest strikeout total of the regulars and highest BB count. Great bat control...Slg % 445, with 3 HR 1 trpl, 8 dbls...
His fielding has been decent. The miss-played ball last night was the only one I recall this season. His 40 year old legs seem to be healed.
Certain positions on this team could certainly use an upgrade, but not BG
Padres don't need to do a wholesale house cleaning just a couple spots.

I hear Cincy is willing to deal Ken Griffy jr. and Boston is ready to give up Big Papi. Along with Loften just sitting around. we can pay them some dough and still be in the hunt, plus it will bring more people to Petco. Just leave are first, short-stop, and third baseman alone!!!!!! 2-1 Pads are down in the 5th. Lets go Pads.....

Do not let Scott Hairston go...He's the most all-around outfielder on the team. Bat, speed. fielding...he's the real deal

I can see the reluctance to deal Greene. And yes, Gonzo and Kouzmanoff are absolutely untouchable. But there needs to be some sort of shakeup. Griffey? No, we've had our share of old stars. David Ortiz? Why would Boston deal him and where would he play here? Plus San Diego would never put up the money to get him here.
Again on Giles...he is in the last year of his contract and I dont see San Diego signing him again. What I mean is a guy that makes $10 mil a year should produce more than he has the past few years. Whatever you can get for him is good sometime this year, if they are going to struggle, get some young guys in there.

There just aren't many valuable commodities on the Padres. The ones that have some value, you don't want to give up.
You're not going to get anything for guys like Bard, Hairston, Kouz, and that group. The team won't want to get rid of it's only major draws in Gonzalez, Greene, Young, and Peavy. I think the pitching staff is your best chance.
Some team that is contending will be able to use Maddux and Wolf down the stretch. These guys are both at the end of the line anyway. Maddux is retiring and his contract is up so he's no help to SD. Wolf has actually shown some signs and can probably give someone a couple of quality starts down the stretch. Deal them both for mid-level prospects. The only other possible bait would be in the bullpen.
