The purpose of this THREAD is for basketball fans to voice their opinion as to who was the best to ever do it. Michael Jordan is definately at the very top of my list, but with players like Majic Johnson, George Gervin, Julius Erving, Wilt Chamberlain etc...etc.... It's kinda tough for me to choose, but I still think the G.O.A.T (greatest of all time) award Goes to MJ. Tell me what YOU think sportsfans!!  And please people, KEEP IT CLEAN!!

This is always a tough question because all the decades were so different in the style of play and the level of talent around them. When I think about it MJ obviously is the first person that comes to mind, but I don't by any means intend to bash him by saying this, he had to wait for Bird, Magic, Isaiah all to retire before he could really dominate. He definetly counts as one of the best but I'd probably go with Bill Russel simply because he's the only guy who could ever succesfully even make it close to a battle with Wilt. Bill Russel practically created the blocked shot and was athletic enough to run coast to coast, with good hands to handle tricky passes from Cousy. Then after playing great he goes on to be a player/coach and get back to the championship. He's just the man. And all of this is IMO so if you disagree I really can't blame you because there are so many players who could deserve that title.

George Gervin??? You really concradict yourself on that one, you talk about who's the greatest and then just start naming your favorite players? No one-dimensional scorer should EVER be mentioned on this list! I was a big Gervin fan, fun to watch him go to work with a ball in his hands. But I could hardly rank him as even close as high as a do-everthing player like Scottie Pippen, let alone Michael Jordan. When you can effect the game from every aspect then you are a player worth mentioning.

Wilt The Stilt without a doubt.  The only other one that had as much of an impact on the way the game is played ( scoring and rules changes because of them) would be George Mikan.

Had to be Jordan - no one else comes close.  It is a little hard to compare players from different eras and that play different positons.

How about this:

Greatest Point:  Magic Johnson

Shooting Guard: Michael Jordan

Small Forward:  Larry Bird

Power Forward:  Karl Malone

Center:  Wilt Chamberlain

That's an AWESOME 5 ULcard, keep in mind, it's all a matter of opinion. A valid point was made, the game's scoring system was changed because of Wilt, But what about Darryl Dawkins?? They had to change the structure of the rim because of him!!! He shattered TWO backboards in the 80's!!

Eras definitely skew statistics and make it hard to compare. Modern players also benefit/suffer from cable/satt/espn/sportscenter exposure that pre1980 players didn't have.So here's my best position choices for all you fellow boomers out there.

PG  - Oscar Robertson  -  once averaged a triple double for an entire season

SG - Earl "the Pearl" Monroe - you have to see his spin move to understand who changed the way you can drive the lane

SF - Elgin Baylor  -  He could "Be Like Mike" long before Mike was Mike. Co
