Who Is Your Pick As NFL's Alltime Best Coach?

My pick is clearly Bill Walsh, as he completely revolutionized the NFL offense and had legions of his assistant coaches become head coaches and win Super Bowls:

The first Walsh disciple to participate in a Super Bowl was Sam Wyche with the Cincinnati Bengals, who coached under Walsh from 1979 to 1982.

Next came George Seifert, who coached under Walsh from 1980-88 and proceeded to win two Super Bowls as the head coach of the 49ers after Walsh departed.

Mike Holmgren (Green Bay Packers), who coached under both Walsh and Seifert won one championship, but lost a second one winning to fellow 49er alumni Mike Shanahan (Denver Broncos). Shanahan, who spent 1992-94 under George Seifert, would go on to win a second Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos.

In 1999, Jeff Fisher took the Tennessee Titans to the Super Bowl. His brief stint with the 49ers under George Seifert from 1992-93 led him to the coaching position in Houston where he became the head coach in 1994. Houston then moved to Tennessee.

Brian Billick (Baltimore Ravens) and Jim Fassel (New York Giants) followed the next season in the Super Bowl. Billick had spent his entire pro-coaching career in Minnesota under Dennis Green, who spent 1979 and 1986-88 under Bill Walsh, while Fassel was some what of a nomad, spending 1995 under Mike White in Oakland. White, meanwhile, was a coach under Walsh in 1979. In addition, Fassel also coached under Walsh at Stanford.

In 2002, John Gruden (Tampa Bay) and Bill Callahan (Oakland Raiders) were added to the Walsh Super Bowl parade. Gruden coached under Seifert in 1990, Holmgren 1992-94 and Ray Rhodes (1981-88 with Walsh, 1989-91, 1994 with Seifert, 1992-93 with Holmgren) from 1995-97, while Callahan spent the same time with Gruden under Rhodes in Philadelphia and was an assistant under Gruden in Oakland from 1998-2001 until ascending to the head coach position in 2002 when Gruden left for Tampa Bay.

Ummm.....Madden anyone?

I would Vote Lombardi..look at all the HOF'ers that were on his team -- the impact he had on professional football  ( and the League Merger ) ... ex...ex...

Bill Bellichick, give me a break, Landry or Parcells are better choices. I vote for Lombardi, best coach to ever step on a field, any sport.  Part of being a NFL coach is displaying character and sportsmanship to your team and the league. Nobody says you have to be warm and fuzzy, but you need to be held accountible for your actions. To be on this list of all-time great coaches, I think getting fired is a blemish on your resume.

All this BS I hear about the cap and free agency and how hard it is, imagine having to draft your entire team. Guys like Landry, Noll, and Lombardi were excellent evaluaters of talent, they put more HOF talent on their teams than anyone before or after them, and they were not allowed to cherry pick from other teams.

The best way to evaluate these coaches is not just by championships, but by the amount of players they put into the HOF from their drafts. You have to see potential, then bring the best out of the player, that is coaching. Also take into account the status of the team prior to their dynasty. Landry, Noll, and Lombardi were all handed clunkers, perenial losers. Bellichick had Parcells set him up, Joe Gibbs had George Allen set him up. Bill Walsh had nobody, he took the 49ers to the top on his own.

Bill Bellichick went 36-44 in Cleve.drafted nobody, had good draft position year after year, failed miserably.  He had 5 years and +/- 65 draft picks, not one player stands out, never mind a HOF caliber player.  His success with the Patriots while admirable by today's standard does not negate his ineptness in Cleveland.  When he finally got Scott  Peoli on board, along with some talent as assitants, he made it big time. Walking off the field even with one second on the clock, is a sore loser, sends a terrible message to the kids who look up to the Patriots. It's only one second, take your defeat like a man instead of ducking into a tunnell to avoid the media and all the controversy.
