As much as I dislike anything that’s “Maple Leafs”, I really got to feel bad for maurice. The guy was handcuffed by management, who gave him a team of WAY overpriced, and WAY undertalented, past their prime, players, and then expect him to win the cup with them. If anything, this guy should have been given a raise for having them even with spitting distance of making the playoffs. Just another indication of why the leafs are such a crappy franchise, atleast these days.

Disagree.
Maurice was a great coach when it came to dealing with the media, but he did not coach with the team's interests in mind. And what does an overpriced team have to do with anything? When it was abundantly clear that the Leafs had no chance to make the playoffs, he should have given Vesa a few nights off and played some of the (sparce) young talent. Experience + better draft... Not a concern maybe since Pogge still isn't playing in the AHL playoffs....
Problem for the Leafs now is that they have come out saying that they will hire a GM for September... There is no way that they hire a new coach before the GM, and even then, the new GM is going to have to evaluate/interview coaches for the team, when is that going to occur then?
If they hire a coach first, they had better be ready to eat that salary really soon after or else the potential new GMs are going to see that the Leafs are still being run above the GM level.

I said “overpriced undertalented” and that’s important, cuz when you have around 20 million of your cap space taken up by guys like mccabe, tucker, sundin, and blake, who all have no trade clauses, it’s kind of hard to bring in players to help improve your team. And that certainly wasn’t paul maurice’s fault. Toronto’s management has a history of paying all kinds of money, and trade away all kinds of draft picks, to bring in the wrong players (allison, lindros, peca, raycroft, blake, etc, etc, etc) and somehow the coach is always the one who gets blamed. The problem in toronto is not the coach, it’s the owners who decided that they were gonna run the team, and only have their gm and coaches as figureheads.

Ummm.... Did you see what happpened with Fergie (not a coach)? It would have been less cruel to string him up at the old Don Jail.

I also think that ferguson was unjustly fired. I don’t think he was even allowed to wipe his a$$ without richard peddie’s permission, let alone make hockey moves.

Maurice's gameplan wasn't right for the Leafs. Maybe this was done so the new GM doesn't have to be the one the throw the axe. It'll be much easier to get a guy like Bowman if the slate's clean for him. Good luck Maurice, you tried.
