Well today is the spring game. Hopefully some of you guys get to check it out. Its not too easy to get ahold of down here in Texas so Im counting on you guys up there!
Biggest Questions for me about the spring game:
How do the QB's look? How is Katz coming along? Does he look like a fish out of water or a possible candidate to start?
How do the RB' s look? Im sure McCants looks good but what about Francis?
Are they finding different ways to incorporate Rodgers into the offense?
How is the somewhat crowded Reciever group taking shape?
(Ok all my questions at this point are offense related I know. )
I could have, I should have, but I won't be going down to watch the game. That would have meant that I would have missed my girls soccer game.
From that stats that Katz is putting up he looks good. Have him redshirt this year. Play backup for 1 year and I think we will then have a very nice QB for 3 years.
I hear that McCants looked good enough that Riley thought about starting him as a true freshman. The stories I hear compare him to Steven Jackson, but the downside I hear is that he needs to work on his blocking and pass catching. I know it was just one spring practice game but I was disappointed hearing that McCants only got 13 yards on 6 carries the last spring practice. I realize that our OL needs work and some of them are out injured right now so I don't know if:
1) Our OL couldn't give him the blocking he needed
2) Our defense is really good and just stuffed him or
3) Whether he is not as good as the new reports.
I am betting on #1 but we will see what happens in today's scrimmage. If you read between the lines on the news reports for Francis, it really sounds like he has the drive to take the #1 spot away from McCants. Plus it sounds like he can catch the pass and is good at blocking.
As for WR I haven't heard much. Beyond the main 3 receivers I have only read heard news about Shane Morales and Chris Johnson.
I look forward from hearing from you guys that actually attended the game today.
I didn't attend the spring game but I read everything I could about it and got some peoples opinions.
McCants averaged 3.5 yards a carry. Everything I read about him was all positive, so my worries about him from my previous e-mail have been laid to rest. With a health OL he should do even better.
I don't believe Francis played do to injuries.
Rodgers looked stronger and faster and out performed stroughter. He also had 12 yards rushing on 3 carries. It looks like we will have 2 go to guys for the coming season.
We have ourselves a place kicker in Justin Kahut. He went 4 for 4 from 31, 43, 50, & 55. Now all we need to do is give him a scholarship. I wonder if there is one available now that Mohktar has left the program.
Lyle had a good showing. Threw for 226 yards on 13 of 30. He still needs to work on his accuracy, but he didn't throw any interception.
Defense was solid with the highlight being Victor Butler. Look to him to be our leading tackler and in sacks.
The screen is gonna be a big play for him and his little brother. Last year Quizz had multiple long touchdowns off screens including the El Campo game where a 75yd screen play was called back on a penalty in the 1st qtr only to have a 77yd screen play for TD in the second half. You gotta find ways to get both of those guys the ball in the open field. No better way than a good screen.
Looks like Lyle is gonna be the guy at QB although those numbers (13 for 30)arent all that impressive. Maybe the defense was just that good?
Good to see McCants running well against a strong run defense.
13 of 30 is not too bad, as I did not see the game, but were some of those misses due to recievers dropping the ball? Mis cues? Or was it due to Lyle having to throw the ball away under defensive pressure? Not having a interception could be a positive on his decision making, but a negative on the O line and a sub par day for the defensive secondary. Also, how was the running game? 226 yards in the air sounds good even at 13 of 30, but were they able to get much done on the ground?
Bunch of questions still there, but the 4 WRs in James Rodgers, Sammie, Catchings, and Johnson sounds pretty solid, so that is good. Now just gotta get Lyle more accurate, and be able to produce on the ground and on short patterns so that we can utilize many different options on offense, and allow our defense time to recover and plan/improvise their game plan against the other team. I don't mind the quick strikes from time to time, as its good for momentum, but we have to allow our defense to mature and show what they are fully capable of.
big bad whitedude keeps picking on me just because i warn every post he rights for no apparent reason even though the admins keep overuling me. i am going to write a letter to santa clause and ask he be put on the naughty list if whitedude keeps private messaging me.

The running game should be exceptional this year which is gonna open up some big play opportunities in the passing game. This offense should be fun to watch if the QB's can play solid and not turn the ball over.
Yeah, sounds like the O-line wasn't in synch and he was having to throw the ball away early, which is good decision making on his part instead of trying to force it in there and then chancing the interception.
Wow, 50 and 55 yarder from the kicker...that will be interesting to watch him develop.
