The Milwaukee Brewers designated Derrick Turnbow for assignment today. He has been struggling this year. He is 0-1 with a 15.63 ERA this year, but may be a change of scenery is what he needs to get back on track. I know that John Smoltz is headed for the bull pen when he gets back from the DL, but we still don't know exactly what he'll be able to give. Turnbow is a proven closer and I think he can come into Atlanta and give the Braves just what they need to fill-in for Peter Moylan. Blaine Boyer and Manny Acosta are not pitching that well and the only arm in the bullpen that I can honestly trust is Will Ohman. I hope the Braves give him a look. It probably wouldn't cost to much to get him in a trade.

What do you all think?

As much as I would like to yes to this I am reminded of someone....what was his name... Dan Kolb...

Dan Kolb didn't have half of the stuff that Derrick Turnbow has. As I remember, Turnbow took Kolb's job as Brewers closer. dan Kold was a pitcher who had to rely on his ground ball outs and if he didn't get them, he blew saves. I would take Turnbow over Blaine Boyer, Manny Acosta, Chris Resop, and Jorge Campillo. Braves should take a look, that's all I am saying.

I disagree Spud. Remember, the Braves still have Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez coming off the DL in the next couple of weeks. It's only early May and it is too early to be making questionable short-term trades for this season. When the All-Star Game comes around, we can revisit this issue then, but for right now I say wait it out and let's see how the current guys and the two guys coming off the DL do.

im going to have to agree with you JE. I believe once Soriano and Gonzalez come back and then us having Smoltz closing would be just about better than any other 3 in the league.

Hes a good setup man now doubt, esp. in games that go late.  Why not if we can get him at a price!

I really never liked Turnbow, I never thought he had good stuff; and his fastball looks like it's lost a few mph.

I do like Derrick Turnbow, and I respect your opinion. I just had a good laugh though when you said his fastball looks like it lost a little bit. If I remember right, he used to throw a flamethrower in the 99 MPH range...

Go Braves!

As far as someone arguing that we'll be okay when Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez come back, we don't know what we'll get out of either down the road. I think the Braves might be pushing Gonzalez a little to hard. Do you remember when Francisco Liriano came back to early? He got lit up and now his confidence is shot. I would rather wait and make sure Gonzo's healthy before throwing him to early. As far as Soriano goes, he's been dealing with this elbow pain since the end of last year and I just don't trust him to last. He recently threw off the mound last Sunday and he still felt discomfort in his elbow. I didn't even mention the fact that Peter Moylan will probably be shut down and get elbow surgery. So that leaves the Braves with a not quite 100% John Smoltz, Blaine Boyer, Chris Resop, Manny Acosta, Jorge Campillo, Will Ohman, Royce Ring, Jeff Bennett, and Buddy Carlyle in the bullpen. Is anyyone comfortable with this group headed into the Summer? I am not! We have witnessed what can happen with these guys. I believe that we haven't won a one-run game all year and have not won a game when tied or behind by one after the seventh inning. Can you see why I want the Braves to at least ask about Derrick Turnbow?

Who likes sloppy seconds.. it didnt work the first time when we took the former closer from Milwaukee.  Turnbow is like a firecracker.. he puts out a lot of light but he goes out quickly and who knows if he'll ever catch fire again.

Well, if Derrick Turnbow doesn't tickle your fancy, Jose Capellan was designated by the Colorado Rockies. He was a prospect of the Braves awhile back.

Jose Capellan... a great lesson in why it doesn't help to throw 100 mph unless the fastball has movement as well.

I wouldn't mind taking a chance on Turnbow.  His fastball isn't as off as kingjp makes it seem.  He's been in the 95-96 range this year.  That's pretty good.  It might just be a matter of locating his pitches.  Plus, the sample size is pretty small so far.

Only if he makes it through waivers. I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Braves uni, but if we claim him, we claim his salary, which is in the 5.2 million range. Not so much,

I had a feeling a thread like this would be started here.

Granted, the Braves are having bullpen issues this yr, but you don't combat issues by adding more issues.

And good point 14.  $5M+ for a guy that would be a set up guy at best is a bit much.  You are talking closer money there, and I think we will all agree that Smoltzie is gonna fall into that role.

14,

It's $3.2M, but when he clears waivers they can send him to AAA.  A trade for more than the minimum dollars to make it worth their while.  In other words, $1,000 wouldn't fly.  A couple years ago, he lost his Closer role, and recently was unhappy to lose his Set-Up role.  He needs a 2nd pitch that he can throw for strikes to compliment his FB.

Spud, calm down we are only 30 games in and our Bullpen hasn't been that bad. Yes we have had some hicups but every team does. Once our Pen gets in a rythem it will be ok. Also, you cant blame all of the 1 run games on the pen, if im not mistaken we have had a lot of runners in scorring position but our Offense could not get anything going if I'm not mistaken Brian McCann is like 4 for 30 with a .125 ave woth RISP. Most of those losses are low scoring games and the pen came in and did their job. They all cant be perfect if we keep on booing them and treating them badly they won't think they have our support. Lets just calm down about trades and deals and let it smooth out and just root for our beloved Braves.
