They scored 14 runs on the Reds. Gee that’s an achievement?

Hate to be a homer, but the Mets are probably the team underperforming the worst right now. The Phillies have Howard and Rollins MIA, but Utley is playing like the best second baseman of all time and Burrell is playing like a 1st overall pick, and not his usual self. The pitching is being what you expected... Hamels is great, everyone else mediocre (Myers not doing great). Your bullpen is likely overachieving at the moment.

The Braves are the same. They're hitters are mostly hot, and their pitching is weak. Hudson is good. Smoltz is gone. They never had depth past that in the first place. Your pitching will continue to suck, and therefore you will continue to lose 2 games every rotation because Hudson and MAYBE Glavine are the only two legit pitchers on your team.

Then look at the Mets. Taking out Ryan Church, name one hot player? The pitching has been good, but not great. The bullpen has been garbage. Every single player on that team except Wagner, Santana, Maine, and Church has nowhere to go but up. And lets be honest... this is what we expected out of Santana and Maine. They're not hot, they're where they should be. Our #f hitter is batting like .205 with 2 HR!!!!! No other team boasts that mediocrity in the 4 hole. Even Howard has like 6 HR.

The point being, on the Phils and Braves, you have VERY hot players for every one having a terrible season. Not so with the Mets. Which is why you have to be more concerned about them than the Phillies.

And for the record... the Reds are a MUCH better team than the Giants right now. Cueto-Volzquez-Arroyo-Harang is a pretty nice rotation (minus Arroyo right now). The Giants couldn't hit a ball off the tee... 3 one run games against what will end up being the worst offense in baseball (calling it now!)? Thats heinous.

Just the facts here, just the facts.  Smoltz is not gone:  he is going to the bullpen.  Also, not to be a homer, but with Gonzalez & Soriano back, with Smoltz, that's a pretty solid BP for us.  Ironically, our BP is the weakest link on the team, thus why we have not won a 1-run game this season.  More about that later in the post.

As far as starting pitching goes, the team with the best ERA for starting pitching is, in fact, the Atlanta Braves.  The top five are:

1.  3.37 - Atlanta
2.  3.45 - Oakland
3.  3.49 - Toronto
4.  3.51 - St. Louis
5.  3.56 - Cleveland

As you can see, the quality of starting pitching is not the problem, it's the longevity.  Atlanta is ranked 2nd to last (29th) in IP by starters.  Now I will ignore the fact that Atlanta is also tied for 29th place in games played, but even if the next starter were to go seven innings, we'd still be towards the bottom of the list.

Ozymandias,

I would recommend looking up Jair Jurrjens, just for the sake of knowing some other players.  We traded Edgar Renteria for him and a catcher Gorky Hernandez.  Now I am not gloating here, but I think it's safe to say that the Braves have a reputable scouting department, so they wouldn't trade away an All-Star SS for garbage.  Much scrutiny came about because of this trade, but that was because nobody knew who Yunel Escobar was (our current starting SS, feel free to click on his name too) but he is proving to be a better decision, at a much cheaper price, with better range.

As far as the rest of the Braves rotation goes, I won't debate.  Chuck James needs some major polish.  Jo Jo Reyes dominates in AAA but got shelled when he came up last year.  He has much to learn (mainly about not getting behind in counts and trying to pain the corners all the time which lead to walks).  Mike Hampton, um:  say whatever you want about him because I'm sick of cheering his recovery back.

Now that quick tidbit about the BP.  Moylan is more than likely out for the year, but three pieces will be back in less than a month (hopefully):  John Smoltz, Rafeal Soriano, and Mike Gonzalez

Can any knowledgeable baseball enthusiast possibly say that this combo isn't formidable?

At the very least, with these three relievers Atlanta can FINALLY do something it hasn't done, ironically, since Smoltz left the bullpen:  establish consistent roles in the bullpen.

Excellent post CD.  To me it just goes to show how bad the Braves bullpen has been this year when you see the team at the top of the starting pitchers stats list and also atop batting list.  That's right this team leads the league in starting pitcher's ERA and in batting for its hitters and yet they are only at .500?!?!  How does this happen you ask?.......

The answer is the bullpen.  yes injuries have taken a toll, but come on.  If the bullpen would have been doing its job even decently this team could be 7 or 8 games over .500 at least!!

As a Braves fan it's been frustrating thus far, but these 3 against the Reds were certainly welcome!!

I still expect this team to be playing in October, but only time will tell.

GO BRAVES!!

Some good stuff in the thread.

The division seems to be middling again.  No one has exactly distinguished themselves; Florida was in the van for a month but has cooled a bit; Philly is currently leading but is missing some key pieces; Atlanta has the above-documented pitching problems; The Mets offense doesn't appear to be all-powerful as we have been led to believe (plus pitching inconsistent); the Nationals have some good young players but have sunk to the cellar like every other year.

Unless one of these teams can string together an eight- or nine-game win streak, they're probably all going to be bunched up until the fall.  So it'll be anybody's division in September.

Philsfan77 -

It seems as if all you're saying is "so-and-so might not be as good as last year". Why> Why do you need to point to someone underperforming compared to last year? Because the Reds have the better overall team. Can you prove that Matt Cain will be as good as last year? See, that arguement is nothing. Good players are good, last year and this year. Heck, the Giants are also counting on Rowand putting up band-box numbers in AT&T park.  And, before I say something unclear- allow me to put a disclaimer on this: I love the Giants pitching. In a few years it could lead them to a NL West title. Matt Cain is very good. Tim Lincicum could be an ace in a couple years. But this year? Cain is still really good(so is Harang). Lincicum is not going to be that ace this year. Good, but needes more time. Lowrhy? I know he's out as of now, but he's a 4. I believe Jonathon Sanchez has stepped into the 5 slot in their rotation(I could be wrong). That's not great pitching. Tell me what's so different about the 2 rotations? Each have a legit ace, each have a young pitcher(or 2) with great stuff. And each has crap after that(with the possible exception of Lowrhy).  So, the Giants rotation, while better, is not good enough to say "bad offense with great rotation". You might say "bad offense with good rotation". Bad offense + good to average rotation= Lots of losses. Good offense + decent rotation= well, at least more wins than the other.
