I don't think anyone should use someone's name or likeness without permission. BUT isn't this lawsuit about 22 years late? Come on now Dick, if it was a problem shouldn't you have spoken up a little sooner? Now you look like the jerk your name implies.

It's obvious to me you don't know what the suit was about. It wasn't about them using his name, it's about the fact that he lent his name on the agreement that the award is used to raise money for charity and the club wasn't raising enough to meet the terms of the agreement. It has NOTHING to do with Butkis being angry over his name being used.

Yea, you guys definately didn't read the article. Try reading beyond just the headline.

He did it because he thinks he can raise more money for the charities.  If the group in Florida had been generating enough money, it wouldn't have happened, but he thinks he can raise more in Chicago.  It is his name, so I guess he should be allowed to try to market it better.

The way I read it, he essentially stole 22 years of work from a charitable organization in order to create or extend his own charitable organization instead of just creating his own award.  The Butkus Award was more then just his name.  The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando created the award for colleges top linebacker, not Butkus.  But somehow he not only walked away with his name but the award also.

I don't think this really makes him look any different than he has looked already. Not much of a story.

They created the award in honor of Dutkus, not for him. He is considered to most as the best ever college linebacker so thats why its under his name.

then you need to read it again.  The Downtown Athletic Club didnt raise enough money to meet the agreement so Butkis ended the agreement and moved it to Chicago.

Um, maybe you need to read it again.  The agreement was for the use of his name not for use of the award.   He took his name AND the award.    The Downtown Athletic Club came up with the award not Butkus.   Read the article again and quote me where it said in the agreement retains rights to not only his name but the award associated with his name also.

Is this guy a great linebacker...absolutely.

Is he also a tremendous a$$hole...absolutely!

Does anyone remember the reality show where he went and "helped coach" the high school team?  He came off as a total prick and in fact left the show before taping had ended for some reason I can't remeber now.

I would bet that this whole award issue has very little to do with a lack of fundraising by the original group and more to do with padding Butkus' own pockets or his trusts' through this non-profit venture.  There is no way he would be doing this if it didn't benefit him or someone he knows personally and he successfully used fundraising as the selling point for the courts.  I wish someone would or could track how much he raises this year as opposed to the Orlando group.
