I am having an argument with a friend of mine about the definition of a "shot" in the NHL.  Do any of you have a good definition of a shot?  We are wondering if a "shot" off the post counts toward stats.  (References would be appreciated)

Thanks!  Lets GO PENS

Hi, and no,a shot off the post or crossbar does not count as a shot on goal. The puck has to hit the goaltender to be considered a shot on goal. And sometimes that all depends if your at home or away.

Beware of the Penguins!!!!!!!!!! (and Malkin)

yea  he's right i remember one night they went over it on fox sports. if it hits the post it is not a shot. it has to hit the goaltender just like igloofan said. i forget which game though. it was early in the season.

The reason it is a shot is if the goaltender isn't there, then it would be a goal...if it hits the post, then it would not have mattered if the goaltender was there or not... unless it goes off the goaltender first.

a shot on net is a when the puck is saved by the goalie in the frame of the net, also if a puck goes in the net, it is a goal.

if a shot hits post/crossbar, it does NOT count as a shot, u must get it on the 4x6 net

A shot on goal is defined as any attempt by the opposing team to play the puck into the offensive net that results in a goal or would have resulted in a goal if a defender(not just a goal tender) had not stopped from crossing the goal line.  A post or cross bar shot is not a shot on goal as a defender did not have to stop the puck from going into the net.
