Unbelievable filly, Eight Belles, takes 2nd in the Kentucky Derby.  Then breaks both front ankles and is euthanized immediately.   Nice run but sad day for hard work it takes to get into that position.

How does this happen? If the legs were going to break, wouldn't they during the actual race? To break both ankles in cool down seems strange.

Same here. Congratulations on the second place. I'll remember her.

2nd place is the real 1st place...

I believe i saw her take a bad step before the finish.  She must have broken 1 about 25 feet before the finish and the other trying to slow down and favoring the other.

Start racing them at 4. Tired of all the old foggies talk about tradition. How many have to die during the race..take that number, mutiply by 100 and you have how many have been severly injured and completely broke down before they even try to make the race.

Another horse dies, more people cry, old friggin bastards talk about how "thats the game"...nothing changes.

SICK

Richard Porter (owner of Fox Hill Farms) and Larry Jones, the trainer of Eight Belles must be devastated. Any animal enthusiast can feel their grief. What a tragic ending to a horse racing's crowning even, The Kentucky Derby.
