Former Tennessee guard Chris Lofton underwent treatment for testicular cancer after a failed drug test at the 2007 NCAA tournament revealed he potentially had a tumor.

"I would like to thank everyone for respecting my privacy during the past year, and I hope that they continue to do so," Lofton said in a statement released by the school Thursday evening. "This has been a very difficult time for me and my family but it has brought us closer together. I have been very blessed that we were able to catch everything early so that now I am OK."

Several school officials declined to comment further about Lofton's condition, citing HIPPA medical privacy laws. Neither Lofton nor his parents returned messages from The Associated Press seeking further comment.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported Thursday that Lofton said he had four weeks of adiation treatment for testicular cancer last March. Lofton said he has made a full recovery but the treatment made it hard for him to train and that he didn't feel he was at full strength until mid-season.

According to an ESPN.com story, Lofton was randomly picked during the 2007 NCAA tournament for a drug test, which revealed high levels of hCG, a hormone that serves as an indicator of pregnancy in women, steroid use or cancer.

Lofton's 431 three-pointers are a Southeastern Conference record and rank third in NCAA history. He was The Associated Press' SEC player of the year as a junior and a second-team All-America.

He was a preseason All-America going into his senior season, but fans and reporters began raising questions when he started the season in a shooting slump.

His shooting improved during the second half of the season, and he still led Tennessee in scoring at 15.5 points per game, though it was a drop from his 20.8 as a junior. He was a third-team All-America.

"I think that his health issues were a factor in his play early this past season," Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl said in a statement. "He physically and mentally overcame all of the challenges associated with battling cancer and serves as a tremendous role model to all of us."

Pearl said Lofton, a native of Maysville, Ky., and his family had wanted to keep information about his cancer private throughout the season.

"There was a point this past season that I was asked about Chris Lofton's health almost every day," Pearl said in the statement. "Chris Lofton is one of the toughest players I have ever been around. Not once did he make an issue of what he has gone through. Never once did he complain."

Wow, that is an amazing story, a story that explains alot about last season.  It also explains alot about the type of person Chris Lofton is, he is a class act and will always be remembered here at the University of Tennessee.  What a hard thing to overcome, he had to go through all the early season criticism of his play while fighting cancer, sheesh.  Chris Lofton just got even more amazing in my mind, he should win an award for athlete of the year, talk about perserverence.  Shocking....

It typies what every Vol fan knows about Chris Lofton.  He was the hardest worker on the court and apparently in the hospital.  This really puts life and basketball in a different perspective.  Every college basketball fan should respect this kid for what he went through and how he battled through it.  Good luck to him on the next level and let that "C" word stay away the rest of his life.

Bruce Pearl has got the right idea: Chris Lofton's #5 should be hanging from those rafters some day. Great Story!

I really commend Lofton for not letting this be an excuse for his subpar season according to his standards. I hope this kid gets a chance in the NBA.

Chris is an incredible person.  Hopefully, he, along with a few others, will be remembered for establishing UT basketball as a national power.  Here is to #5 hanging in the rafters right next to #2.

This makes all of us questioning his abililty at the beginning of the year have a different light on it.  Chris Lofton is a tremendous player and PERSON.  Glad he is now cancer free that is a rough thing to go through and I hope he can get on in the NBA (at least dhe development league) to show off some of his skills.

I hope he can get on in the NBA (at least dhe development league) to show off some of his skills. I do think somebody will give him a shot in the NBA, although it might only be temporary.  I can see Lofton doing very well for himself playing basketball in Europe, he fits well to their game.

Major props to Lofton and the Vols program!! What a welcome contrast to so many other so-called athletes (inc. many from my alma mater) -- Lofton deserves every accolade for his courage and dignity.

Proof that amidst the negativity of news stories there exists inspiration... thank you Chris for being a fighter when so many choose to quit.
