Marino had the awesome junior year but seriously degressed in 82' so I would not count him as the greatest "college player since 60'. Greatest pro player he's right in the mix. In fairness to Marino that entire Pitt team degressed in 82'.

I wished he had "degressed" at the 81 Sugar Bowl. Broke our hearts on that last minute touchdown bomb. I am still feelin it.

Herschel was a fantastic CFB RB, but the day that I went over the top being impressed with him was during the NCAA T&F Nationals in Baton Rouge ('81 or '82, I think). There he was, lined up for the 100M finals and it looked like this:
- - - - ^ - - -
As I remember it, Walker didn't win the race but just the fact that this huge muscle-bound dude was there competing against those little quick guys was just amazing ...

Yeah cajun. I know exactly what you are talking about. He looked like a tank out there next to those lithe sprinters. The guy was amazing and he tried everything. From ballet to the Olympic Bobsled team. We love him here for obvious reasons because he is such a good guy. His recent revelations and whatever the illness is sad and I pray that it all goes well for him.
When we had the huge Michael Adams and Vince Dooley split a few years ago, Herschel was at the front of the fight against that egoistic jerk in support of Vince. Many alumni, instead of stopping their contributions, instead sent in a check.....with 34 cents on it.

Anyone remember Anthony Davis? No. Not the greatest player in that span but easily one of the 4-5 most exciting.

I Know hes not the greatest fooball player in college ( there are many that will overshaddow his stats ) and im gonna sound like a huge homer but what about Anthony Carter : WR -Michigan ( 1979-82 )
161 recep. / 3,076 receiving yards / 37 TD's ( which includes a career high 14 TD's in "82" ) -- averaged 19.1 yac - was also a kick returner -- was voted an 3 time all american ( in the Big Ten ) and his 33 touchdown receptions during regular season games is the second best total in NCAA history. He didnt win the heisman but was fourth on a ballot in 1982 which had guys like Hershel Walker ( 1. ) , John Elway ( #2. ) , Eric Dickerson ( #3 ) , and Dan Marino ( # 9. )

Major Harris, West Virginia - without him the mobile, run first, throw second shifty QB would not yet exist. Vince Young, Troy Smith, Donovan McNabb, Dennis Dixon, etc... all have Major to thank.

Jim Brown deserves some contention. First African American to win the Heisman. A movie is coming out about him sometime this summer.

I'll take Jeremy Shockey over Kellen Winslow, but Kellen Winslow over everyone else. Why? Because he's a f***in' soldier!
