I cannot believe no one has taken a flyer on Doggs. We all know what a stud he was at OS. His speed, instincs, ball-skills and toughness should at least get him a shot in someone's mini-camp.
I will be very disappointed if he doesn't catch on somewhere.
Good news according to Paul Buker http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindbeaversbeat/ Dogget got picked up by Tampa Bay. I still can't believe it took this long, but that's great that someone is giving him a shot.
Yes, I was quite surprised too that he didn't go, and it does seem a while for him to be picked up. Is his spot a position that was heavily recruited? His style of play something that has filled out the ranks recently with younger guys? I don't know why there would be a pass on him...maybe there was some "unofficial" thing people noticed or heard about? A little politics that we are not privy to? Seemed odd.
Even though Doggett excelled at strong-side outside linebacker for the Beavers, he will have to find his niche again in the NFL, where many scouts feel that he will have to shift to another position. He is too small and light to play strong-side linebacker at the next level and looked adequate in an experiment using him at strong safety during East-West Shrine Game practices. He lacked the smooth backpedal to cover receivers, but did show good tackling form when utilized as a nickel linebacker.
From CBS Sportsline Draft Profile. Hes a tweener in the NFL. If he's gonna have to be a Safety in the league then he needed to show good coverage skills in the offseason workouts and East West game. Apparently he didnt do that. Hes likely gonna have to carve his niche on special teams. He could end up being one of those diamonds in the rough. NFL people put too much emphasis on the measurables. For that matter so do colleges which is why the Rodgers brothers werent heavily recruited by the big time D1schools. To me if a guy can play he can play.
I say give it some time. If Dogget makes the most of his opportunities he'll get his shot. He's one of those guys who will have to become a role player. He may never make it off of special teams, but what a special teamer he will be.
I was actually surprised about this one. I think the NFL, like the college recruiting, obviously has its quirks. Sometimes high draft picks are duds, and lower draft picks become very good, if not the highest caliber athletes. I hope that at least Dogget gets a chance to find a good role, where he can be consistent and good.
Having more and more beavs in the NFL is always a good thing.
