The nice thing about a smaller playoff, though, would be that it would preserve the structure of minor bowls. Although some people think they are ridiculous, I think that the minor bowls give the fans of less-dominant college football teams a chance to get away and celebrate their teams' accomplishments. College football is not a level playing field. Indiana will never outrecruit LSU. If we scrapped all of the bowls in favor of a mega-playoff a la basketball, a mediocre team's reward for a 7-5 season (good by Indiana standards) would be a first round humiliation at the hands of a national power. At least in the bowl system the teams are somewhat evenly paired. A small playoff that does not disrupt the minor bowls is a good compromise.

Did anyone else catch this quote in the article?
"I know that's what a lot of fans don't want to hear, but they're not responsible for crafting what we have in college football," said Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese.
We're not responsible? Really? Aren't we the a-holes that purchase the tickets, merchandise, plane tickets to bowl games, season tickets, satellite packages to watch all games and buy their goods/services advertised during their games, etc?
In think what Mr. Tranghese is really trying to say is this:
"Dear college football fans, you can all just F-Off because we are exactly like Roger Clemens. We are right with everything we do and you are not. We have the power to do what we want, when we want and how we want. You're all just a bunch of shmucks that will still fork over your money just as you do now."

College football is not a level playing field. Indiana will never outrecruit LSU. If we scrapped all of the bowls in favor of a mega-playoff a la basketballLike Davidson and G'town are on the same in recruiting in BB? Nobody would want a 64 team tourney like BB but there would still be upsets like Colorado over Oklahoma or Kentucky over LSU or App St. over Michigan etc........ I think they would have to use a 16 team format so it gurantees every BCS conference champion a spot with the stronger conferences getting multiple bids and a couple non BCS teams if they are undefeated or have 1 loss.

BHDAU1, you're the moron. I said the Big 10, Pac 10, Big East and Big 12 were all conferences that said no to a playoff. Learn to read before you try to speak.

You might hate the SEC but, at least we're trying. I'm proud to know that my conference cares about the fans. It's that sort of mentality that has made the SEC the most successful conference out there. All of these other conferences are worried that their teams cant make it through a playoff and that is why they shot this down. Seriously, can anyone picture Ohio State or Oklahoma winning a couple of bowl games in a row?? This "1 game playoff" is the only way they can even hope to win a NC.

This is a sad day for D-1 football fans. Five more years of 'for sure' teams being screwed. The old guys calling the shots are younger than I am and those suckers suck. Dear Lord, please allow me to live long enough for us die hard fans to see a plus what ever playoff.
GO DUCKS!

Yeah, I can see this progression. +1 is fine for now, but let's get to an 8 team playoff sometime. I'd even be happy with a 4 team playoff, just something so we can really crown the best team.

Demo-D is right. I know I could not not watch college football as a protest.
But wouldn't having a playoff in theory bring in more money ultimately than the current system? Don't get me wrong, as a football junkie I enjoyed the Georga/Hawaii game, but don't you think FOX would have preferred to air 2 or 4 games that had actual national champion implecations rather than some of the matchups the ended up with in the BC$ bowls? Wouldn't that have brought better ratings and ultimately mo' money?

As expected, 90% of the fans in the "straw poll" want some type of playoff. The BCS is a JOKE and widely hated ridiculed, etc. How in hell can 90% of the fans who support the game want this, have a viable solution (some sort of playoff even if just a plus 1) and the commisioners refuse for at least another 4-6 yrs? This is absolutely the most absurd ridiculous thing in the history of all athletics considering college football cannot do something as simple as institute a minimum 1 game playoff. What other issue in college football can you get 90% of fans to agree on and still nothing?
Do you guys realize that the call for a college football playoff has been going on and simple viable solutions have been on the table for 25 years+? Go back to the 1983 season where the top 4 teams all had one loss and it was a complete clusterf*ck as to who was number one. That year, SI ran an article with a simple playoff solution that would not have an impact on academics (go to the si vault online and look at the article). Biggest damn joke I have ever seen and I am completely sick and fed up with the idiots I hate with a passion now. Nothing I can do either as I love college football and will never stop watching so what us as fans want (which is PAINFULLY clear to all) is ignored.
