I am so tired of coming on here and reading negative posts after a pitcher has a bad outing. Here's a news flash to everybody....................we WILL NOT have a perfect season...............get use to the up and down year!!
Did you forget the 2 shutout innings he pitched against texas?? I'm not saying he's great, but he's what we got. We are 3 WEEKS into the season!!
In Aquino's defense, he pitched a lot more than he is used to and probably tired out last night. However, an argument against him is that he only has two one inning scoreless appearances on the season. It might be better to bring Cherry or Hoey in once they get healthy, unless Trembley really wants that extra veteran presence in the bullpen. He just doesn't have enough command on his fastball, it almost looks like a curveball sometimes with how wild it is. He earned a spot on the team with the Spring Training he had, but he has just about pitched himself off of the team with his performance thusfar in the regular season. Sorry Skeeter, two good performances sandwiched between all these not so good to horrible outings does not give him a mulligan on the bad performances. Bradford and Walker may have just had a bad game (or in Walker's case, two), but Aquino is the opposite, the good games aren't coming often enough.
Yes, true, it does not give him a mulligan. My point was that there is so much negativity on this board by other people. This season is gonna be like this all year long. Some pitchers will work out, some wont, some will be average. Maybe he's not paying off, but I do know that I'm not gonna have an opinion on a player in the 3rd week of the season. Its way to early.
We've already had threads about how Bradford sucks, another pitcher sucks, and now Aquino is not paying off. Its WAY too early.
I think we have enough pitching talent stocked up that Aquino's success or lack thereof is largely irrelevant. sure, I want to see everyone succeed, but not everyone is going to.
Too small a sample size to decide yet, but my gut tells me he is going to be one of the guys who doesn't last. Once another arm is proven, perhaps Aquino will be out of there. He still will be allowed a good amount of time for redemption, though.
Greg Aquino is a fine reliever and offers the Orioles closer experience if George Sherrill faulters or gets injured. He's a MLB veteran that was injured coming into spring training and probably hasn't gotten his regular season rythymn going yet. And due to the short outings of the starters, the bullpen arms are being overworked. As mentioned previously, Chad Bradford, Jamie Walker and even the reliable Dennis Sarfate have had their poor outings. This bullpen has the makings of a dominant unit. They need pitching experience, and to form a bond and chemistry. With under 20 games together, perhaps some of us are asking for too much, too early.
Skeeter and OTM are right. This team isn't supposed to go anywhere so give the guys a chance to right themselves. I don't think Aquino is really a part of the future but hes a vet. with some experience to help the kids out. Besides if he improves and starts pitching better he could be a nice trade chip later.
I'm gonna side with Balto on this one. Aquino has given up eight runs in six innings for a sparkling 12.00 ERA. He is the only new guy in the pen that has not impressed me at all. Aside from that year he closed with Arizona in 2004, he's been absolutely horrible. He did do well in spring training and I really thought he'd be better than this. His control is all over the place and my opinion is that as soon as someone is able to return from injury (probably Cherry), Aquino will be the one to go to make room unless he turns it around in a hurry. We got him for his closer experience, but with how well Sherrill has done, it kinda makes him a bit more expendable especially considering his performance so far. I still believe room will be made for Cherry once he is able to return and Aquino seems more and more like the most likely pitcher to be sent down to make room.
Speaking of not having major league stuff..... did that White Sox game where they won 6-5 mess with Randor Bierd's head. Seemed like everything he threw last night was getting jacked.
