Watching tonight's game, Palmer said something about Trachsel that I think was very telling. We all know this, I guess, but Palmer put it well.
"Well, you [the Orioles] got him to eat innings until Adam Loewen establishes himself. Now Loewen's on the DL, and you didn't figure you'd be 14-9, either."
That's about the best summary of the Orioles and Steve Trachsel. I still think he was a great pickup when we got him. Palmer also said "You hope he goes 6 innings, maybe three runs, which is a quality start and a 4.5 ERA, and then you want to score a bunch of runs." Again, very astute. That's good enough for your fifth starter if the goal is to be reasonably competitive during a rebuilding project.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look so good in hindsight because we're playing well, Trachsel is doing just a little worse than usual, and we're now short a starting pitcher. There is some depth there, but with Loewen going down the team doesn't have the option of letting Trachsel go if this kind of pitching continues and we stay hot overall.

Why do we have him he sucks, all he does is walk people and gives up doubles and homers. Why dont we put Albers or Johnson in or pull up someone. Why struggle with a 37 year old pitcher when we could get precious innings for a prospect .

TRAX drives me insane. However he did come through at the dread line last year. We did get a prospect there. We signed him to eat up innings (he's not really doing that), but we also signed him in hopes to trade him again right?
At this rate we wont get anything for him. I like Albers in the pen. "If it aint broke dont fix it." Let's give Johnson a shot.

My point was that Trachsel doesn't suck, but that he's the kind of guy you can afford in the back of your rotation in a situation like the one the Orioles were projected to be in. If we keep winning, then by all means we should replace him. He has no value to a team that's going good, but he can eat innings. He's an average pitcher, but a journeyman who can take some pressure off the pen. Hasn't been working out that way this year, though.

Yeah, it looked like he was going to give us the same kind of year he gave us last year, but this thing where he'll just walk a batter he doesn't want to pitch to keeps digging him holes that he can't climb out of and he winds up giving up big innings. Guthrie is having similar problems with pitching to batters he doesn't want to face, and that's one of the reasons he's given up so many home runs already this year. He'll start a batter off well, but then pitch around him and then groove one, or groove one on the first pitch of an at bat.

I think Trachsel is just fine with the O's. He's not gonna turn many heads, but he will give you 5 - 6 descent innings. And with most of his starts, he'll keep ya in the game. It was cold up in Chicago in his last outing. He's the type of pitcher that NEEDS to hit his spots in order to be successful. The cold weather could have had something to do with his location.
And like what was said.................he's an inning eater. We dont need to be rushing any of the young pitchers right now. We are not even a month in a very long season.

For my opinion regarding Steve Trachsel as a member of the Orioles pitching staff, I refer you to an earlier post on Jamie Walker (in which I threw in Chad Bradford for good measure). He's a veteran who will help the youngsters to keep their heads screwed on straight. He's not a shut-down pitcher, and never has been. He'll take his knocks, but he is consistent overall, and that is an excellent quality this ridiculously young, promising staff needs. I don't believe he's holding us back at all, and I also tend to look at what Orel Hersheiser said with regard to Hank Steinbrenner's "idiotic" comment (see what I did there?) about Joba Chamberlain and the Yankees' staff: with as young a staff as we have, we shouldn't just throw the new guys--particularly those with limited starting experience--in there. Trachsel's a good influence, and I think he knows he's just keeping a spot warm for when the youth movement shows they're ready.

Yeah but the thing is Trachsel is at that age now where that consistency could start slipping at any time never to return again. He hasn't gotten past the third inning in two of his five starts so far, so if he's only good for three innings or less 40% of the time, he is holding us back because he is not giving the bullpen a rest and is only exacerbating the concern about exhausting the bullpen. We should have signed Kyle Lohse or some other veteran that can do better. Trachsel actually puts more pressure on the young pitchers to pitch deeper into games because he certainly can't be relied on to pitch six innings most of the time.
