Here is what Rich Minter - who saw him practice at ND - had to say about "Double D":

"He redshirted last year at Notre Dame so I saw him every day. He was our scout team quarterback much like he'll do this year at UC because of the transfer rule. Double-D, as he's known, is a great young man number one. Academically he's a very strong student and he's a student of the game. Tremendous competitor...great athlete...good leader. He's the Pied Piper, let me tell you, guys are gonna follow this kid. He attracts people like Velcro-people want to stick to him. He is that kinda guy. Put him on the field and it's gonna be unbelievable. This is the perfect offense for this young man. That's what Charlie tried to do that first game at Notre Dame, but his coaching staff doesn't really know the spread offense. That's not what they do. This is what Brian Kelly does and has done it as long as anybody can imagine. I'm very impressed with the way Ben Mauk is playing, and with Pike and Grutza they've got a lot of depth at quarterback. But this guy right here could very well take 'em to the promised land athletically. I'm not trying to put him up there like Beano Cook did to Ron Powlus years ago and give him the Heisman, but I'm just saying this is the perfect fit for him. I think the city will learn to embrace this kid because he's got a magnetic personality and he's going to be very fun to watch. Particularly with the lower half of his body. Brian will bring him along structurally very well as a thrower and he'll be adequate in the passing game, but this guy will be Vince Young-like in what he'll be able to do carrying the football in that spread offense."

Also, go to rivals.com site, search for him in the recruiting class of 2006. He was a 4 star recruit. They listed him as the #2 double-threat quarterback in the entire nation, #1 was Tim Debow of the Gators. I guess he did OK. Take a look at the other teams that recruited him, including Louisville and "The University of Ohio State."

He is going to have to earn his starts, but I think Kelly has done it again. I can't wait for the season to begin. In fact, I'm going to go to the Spring Game for the first time ever.

(And, the kid is a very good student)

Thanks for posting that Bearcat.  I was wondering how Jones fit into ND's offense as far as the spread goes.  I had my suspisions that that was why he was cut so soon.  It will be very interesting to see what happens this spring with the QB competition.  I think we pretty much know what we'd get with Grutza.  Pike is unproven, and I suppose the same could be said about Jones, but Jones is definitely more of an athlete than Pike.  And of course Mauk's second appeal is still out, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.  It's looking more and more likely that the 'Cats can repeat their success from last season. (Glad to hear that Jones is a good student too.)

Go 'Cats!

There must of been some serious miscommunication  between ND and DD for him to be tossed aside so quickly.  Sounds like to me they both could've saved themselves from this ending and DD could be prospering somewhere else.

Glad to have him for sure but this guy is as green as a Northeastern tomato in June.  First and formost a QB has to be an outstanding decision maker, all the other attributes are gravy.

From Bill Koch at the Cincy Enquirer.  Pay special attention to the last paragraph from a separate article... pretty funny, but I don't think Jones will be ready to start this season.  Sounds like that shoulder surgery took a lot out of him:

'Here’s Mauk’s assessment of the five quarterbacks in spring practice:

“They’re progressing. I think Demetrius (Jones) has a long way to go, but he’s at the right place. I think Chazz (Anderson) has a lot more confidence now. One of the guys I really like is Zach Collaros. He’s real athletic. He kind of plays how I like to play. He could be the man down the road for a long time.

“Tony Pike has come a long way. He changed his grip on the football and he looks real good. And of course you have Dustin Grutza with his experience. He can come in and win a game. All these guys have the tools to do it.”'

"Reporters from Chicago Tribune and ESPN.com were at practice today to do stories on Notre Dame transfer Demetrius Jones. They were both taken aback when Brian Kelly said that Jones had progressed from stinking to merely lousy."

He's eligible this year.   thats why they got him in so quick.  He was enrolled for winter quarter so has been at UC for 2 quarters already now.

I realize he's eligible to play, I'm just not convinced that he is physically ready after his shoulder surgery.  Sounds like he's been struggling to come back from it.  I'm sure he will eventually, but I just don't think it looks good for the start of this season.  I think we're more likely to see Grutza as this year's starter with Jones getting the nod the following season, once he's back to his form.  He may take some snaps this season, but I'm not expecting significant playing time.  But, I could be wrong...
