...would Long be #1 on Judge's list if he weren't the son of Howie Long??
It's OT Jake Long that is top on Judge's list, not Howie's son.  And I see Miami drafted him - good OT are very valuable to an offense, and they typically have long careers.  It's a good value pick, and miami has many needs on offense, certainly relative to their defense.

Nothing bad to say about Chris Long, but a part of me would be scared to draft Gholston #1 (remember the $$) - he strikes me as a workout warrior who won't translate the measured potential onto the football field.

The topic is about defensive ends, not the whole draft class snoop. I agree that Jake Long would be a safer pick than Chris Long though. Its inherent because of what you said about them naturally having long careers and being very valuable.

I think long is better because he is the perfect mold of a all around DE. Gholston is more of a pass rusher, while Long can rush the passer and stop the run. Also if Long was at Ohio St he wouldve been off the charts. Long also has been coached by a great defensive guy in Al Groh.

An honest answer, J!!!!  Awesome.  With all the homers here, that's good of you to say, especially with how nuts Buckeye fans are.  Seems like the Gholston bandwagon is in full swing everywhere else.....good to hear a straight comment.

As a Pats fan, I'll take the somewhat less talented overachiever over the 'play when I feel like it' freak any day.  Oh, wait, Randy Moss said that, didn't he?  Oops.

you know, I just watched the combine stuff for these two guys (at nfl.com on Kirwan's mock has links) and truth to tell, it looks to me that Long is the more fluid and  athletic of the two.  Now, I know G had the better 40 and vertical, but Long just looks smoother in motion.

Impressive.

Numbers mean nothing. When does a DE ever have to sprint 40 yards in a straight line? And a vertical jump wearing pads and a 320lb guy in your face is very different form a gym.

In my mind there is no competition. Chris Long is streets ahead of Gholston. I may be biased as a Raider`s fan, but we need an every down DE to accompany Burgess who is predominantly a pass-rusher, something that Gholston is. Gaudy numbers help you with rbs and wrs, and safeties and cbs. Unfortunately, that`s all Gholston has.

Chris Long is the better, safer pick. As a fan of Penn State and the Big 10 I got to see Gholston play, he takes too many plays off and quits on other plays when he thinks the ball is going the other way. Long is going to be off the board at least by the Raiders at #4 where Gholston could slip to the Pats at #7.

I think the main area of Chris Long's superiority, beyond all that has been eloquently stated, is that Long has a high football IQ on the field and having been the son of an NFL player/legend, is well aware of how one should conduct oneself off the field- as a role model to youngsters and as a human being. I think he'll also handle the mental stress better, having been exposed to it through his dad- the long trips, the heightened aches and pains and the temptations of being an elite athlete. I think we can safely say that Mom and Dad didn't raise Chris to be a fool.

I don't know Gholston's family life, but I suspect that he didn't have that added bonus of an in-house role model who has been there and done that.

Anybody that has had the pleasure of seeing Long play will tell you he is amazing. He will make an impact his first year.

Long has speed, size, agility and is a very smart player giving him the ability to disrupt every offensive play. Not only does he have the tools, he uses the tools. He may be the best player in the draft.
