From the opening bell of this main event, there was no doubt who the better fighter was. GSP was absolutely a machine. Serra should apologize for holding his belt for so long.
Now, I would like to see Matt Hughes rid us of Mr. Serra once and for all. I felt that Matt Serra was an imposter in any coversation of elite fighters. He is good, he is not elite. I want to see Serra lose to Hughes, then Alves, then Parisyan, then retire. Think we can make that happen before Christmas?
On another note. Rich Franklin looked good but I'd like to see a Franklin-Lutter 2. Ironically enough, as this fight ended I looked at my plate and I had already eaten the last wing, and I wanted another. Quite symoblic.
Michael Bisping continues to underwhelm me, and he looked emaciated at middleweight. I was waiting to see Dan Marino in his corner holding a Jenny Craig flag.
Nate Quarry looked to be back legit, or Kalib Starnes is just a poseur (that's French Canadian) Nate pounded, then Starnes did laps around the octagon.
Mac Danzig is going to continue to move up, he was very impressive, but the guy he beat, Bocek is absolutely, without a doubt, as tough as they come. Reminded me of Randall "Tex" Cobb against Larry Holmes. Took everything, but wouldn't be put away. I don't know the proper medical term for a broken face, but Bocek had it. Mac looked good though, even though he was frustrated that he couldn't seem to put the guy away until he flattened him out and got him with the choke (third try) I would've gone outside the cage and gone all ECW on him with a steel chair or a kendo stick.
That's all I have to say about that. I wonder what Dana White and Matt Serra were arguing about??
Overall, a pretty good night. It could have been better if the top two fights had been longer, but that's really the only negative I've got for an overall pretty good UFC.
Without a doubt GSP looked to be, and is, the better fighter. As a result it is GSP who should apologize for losing so convincingly in the first plave to Serra. Serra may not be as talented but he has what so many others of his weight class lack - and that is heart.
GSP could and should be so much better - if he only cared. It is obvious you have a personal grudge against Serra who remains one of the most popular fighters.
As far as the argument goes between Serra and White - who knows? As all UFC fans know how close GSP and White are there is no telling.
The top fights were great to the educated viewer. The ground game is what UFC is all about. If you want boxing you should watch boxing.
Wild Olive. Excellent analysis.
Skreffy, not so good.
Seems like you are trying to sound all knowing and put down Olive's post there Skreffy. It did not take an educated viewer to appreciate and understand the headlining fights. Unless being educated in fighting means less than being educated in viewing as i'm a BJJ blue belt and took 2 years of Thai boxing. GSP dominated to a point where there was no question as to how the fight might turn out. He used power and size to hold Serra down and his quickness to pick him up and drop him. It's not like he was pulling off intricate sweeps that only your keen eye could pick up. My girlfriend and her sister understood and enjoyed it (as well as GSP's physique). Other than a near armbar by lutter, that fight was a mostly standup fight. The diapointing part about it was Lutter gassed out because of his conditioning. Had he come in totally prepared, the fight could have turned out differently. It looked like his hands were tied to his thighs cuz he couldn't even raise them towards the end of that fight. It leaft me a bit unimpressed by both fighters. Franklin won the battle of the knees. Where that going to get him against Silva, the man with the best knees in the UFC?
Serra became one of the most popular fighters in the UFC from the show, recently. Not from his old days. He is barely over .500 in the UFC. Another big loss and he will drift back into obscurity as he had for a couple years before the show so he better bring it all next time. He does have heart, no doubt, but so does GSP. He overlooked Serra in their first fight, it can happen when you are that good. He did not think Serra had the power or skill to put him down and paid the price. He showed his heart by man-handling Serra tonight. GSP should be so much better? 2 time champ at 26 and the ONLY man who can truly make Matt Hughes look pedestrian. He got caught slipping once. He's incredible and I can hardly imagine him being much better. He beats people is every aspect of the game.
i totally agree about Serra.. he is a joke who rode 1 lucky fight to prominence.. i'm pretty sure a few of my daughters could beat him... as far as a Franklin-Lutter 2 I'd have to disagree.. Lutter is just not that good and until he learns how to get himself in shape for a fight then it is pointless... once you get past the 1st 3 minutes he is out of gas and stumbling around the ring like an idiot
I bet Dana told Serra he was being a wuss by turtling without being really that badly hurt.
Lutter is not a UFC athlete. He's a great grappler, but his last two fights he missed weight and gassed out very, very early without much reason. Does the guy train MMA, or just grappling? And it was totally busch to claim Franklin was never hurt. You can question his timing on the surgery or say that he could have fought with that injury but to say that he wasn't hurt at all and just wanted to be home for the holidays is freakin' stupid. He deserved that whoopin'.
It does make me wonder how he did so well against Silva who just killed Franklin x2.
Odd that you gave my analysis poor marks and then decided to agree with it. I stated Serra was dominated and you agreed. I said that he obviously isn't as talented and you agreed. As far as ground game versus striking you admitte your bias by having predominantlt striking training. For full disclosure I did take Judo (just the regular kind) for 8 years and made it Brown belt.
I'm not really sure what you sister has to do with this nor why you are oggling GSP but whatever makes you happy.
I agree with you on the outcomes, but this UFC was "sheet". No more BJJ guys getting kicked and punched while in the turtle. Strikers are getting better, and we all know the Gracie days are over. Lutter and Sierra both had guys who were new gen fighters. Why even headline these match-ups when we know the outcome. Off course they have to fight in some instances. but I want to see fighters who both need the win to bring them closer to something they think they deserve. Not chum.
I love the UFC so not to hit them square we must put some responsibility on the trainers.
It is your job to let your boy know the truth.
My point was that you did not need to try and come off as you are the only one who understands anything about MMA. Also, I've been taking jiujitsu for the last 1.5 years and no longer am doing muay thai. I actually enjoy it much more. That's ground game. I just did not think the ground game, at least jiujitsu wise was that impressive. It was wrestling which does often make fights boring. Give me either of the Diaz brothers, BJ Penn, Kenny Florian, the list goes on and I love to see some good ground work. The problem is that so many excellent wrestlers are finding success now by holding down opponents and occasionally dropping an elbow. Unless they are fighting another great wrestler, it's a slow ground and pound to victory. No hard feelings though I may have come off a little harsh yesterday.
Fair enough! The ground game may not be as exciting as the one-punch knockout but I believe (whether the GSP showed this or not I guess remains subjective) it still requires a lot of technique which is harder to develop than sheer force. I admit - I love a good knockout. I may have been being harsh as well and lumping you in with a lot of UFC fans (and you know there are a lot of them) that simply hate the ground game. That always gets me on a rant. I feel they may have jumped on the bandwagon late in the game (which is fine - we want the fans) and may not realize the Gracie roots.
My friend and I were wondering what Dana and Serra were arguing about too after the fight. Luckily we had it recording as we watched it and hit rewind and dana asked if he wanted to fight Hughes or move down to light-weight.
Lutter is the only fighter to even look like he remotely had a chance against Anderson Silva. He actually controlled a good part of that fight. The problem I've seen with Lutter, is that he gasses out going for the submission, and when he isn't able to, has nothing left. The ref stands them up and he gets killed. Of course, that was against the last two middleweight champions, who've made a lot of good fighters look bad.
The Franklin-Lutter fight just left me wondering if the outcome would be the same if both guys were on their "A" game, or maybe that was their "A" game and Anderson Silva is just that spectacular.
