Well, it always hurts losing to forking Rangers. Even more so with Scott Gomez on the team. I have said this all years long that team needs scoring depth and a stud defenseman. My thoughts are below.
A true blue bona fide number 1 center. A guy who can get the puck to Gionta (who I think still has it in him to score 40 goals but just doesn't have the talented centerman anymore who can get dish him the puck in open ice to make plays.) This will also give Parise more room to work with and with that maybe go ahead and break the 40 goal plateau which I think he is capable of.
A bone crunching defenseman who can dish out hits, put the fear of god in opposing teams, start the break out with a crisp pass and work the point on the power play. Any chance you will come back Scott Stevens? The defense the Devils put on the ice this year left much to be desired. The acquisition of Salvador did not accomplish much in opinion because the dude was hurt a lot and when he wasn't he looked confused out on the ice. Maybe that will change next year as he becomes acclimated.
Maybe Lou will break tradition this year and pick up the needed pieces through free agency. They usually always draft well but I doubt with there draft position they will pick up someone who can help right away.
I think Sutter did a great job this year of working with what he had and I also believe John Maclean (who was one of my fav Devils players of all time) is a great assistant and will make a good head coach one day and Larry Robinson is excellent as well although I would love to see Scott Stevens start working with the defense because he had unique ability and demanded respect on the ice. Daneyko had this as well. Today's Devils Defenseman just don't have that. Maybe I am just wishing for something that can never be again since the game has changed so much since those guys where drafted. But seriously, do any of the Devils defenseman scare the crap out of you? Hardly.
I want another cup for Marty, I think it can be done but Lou needs to bring in some talent because it isn't coming from the minors.
Just my humble opinion folks. Lets see what the summer brings, its something to look forward too. Go Devils!

Before I posted again, I wanted to calm down from the embarrassment of not winning a game on the Pru Center ice. I didn't want to overreact.
Offense: The Devils need to pick up a big body whose not afraid to get in the front of the net and pick up garbage goals. Too many times during the year, there were times when this team settled for taking a shot and not going after the loose rebounds. Having that big body would allow for more rebound chances to turn into goals and give the Devils an extra kick on the powerplay. When Rupp was in the Cup finals against Anaheim, I thought he would be that big body guy. But clearly he hasn't panned out that way, and unless he changes his thinking then the Devils need to look for this player via free agency or draft.
Also, the Devils need a player who can just flat out put the puck in the net. I think there were too many players this year who couldn't finish on a one-timer or just rip one by a goalie. That being said, I think a lot of guys, like Elias and Langs had an off year and should improve next year. However, the Devils need a guy who can be a consistent threat other than Parise. I think the Devils have a good center in Zubrus, and he flashed his potential during the playoffs. I think this team needs another center, but we can't look for too much in the offseason. I'd take a scorer and a big body for the front of the net. I think this team says goodbye to Sarge, but keeps Pando.
Defensemen: This was one of the biggest problems all year, and it starts with guys just not making smart plays. There were too many times that our defense let us down, and as a team I think our defensive play was down all year. I like Mottau and Martin, but beyond that I'm a little skeptical. White took some bad penalties this year and looked lost at times. I respect the hell out of the guy for what he did to just come back and play hockey, but we'll see what happens with him. Also, I want to see more of Oduya. This kid had some brilliant flashes, especially in the second half, but still makes a lot of mistakes on the ice. Vish is a big hitter, and I like his physical play. It makes people think twice before coming into the defensive zone. However, he leaves himself out of position by going for the big hit, and that's a huge problem. Salvador was a nothing pickup and should be gone in the offseason. I also think this team should keep Rachunek. He's quick, and he has a nice shot. I think he can help the team on the PP and he plays solid defensively.
Overall, I think the team needs a D-Man who can quaterback the PP. Martin did not do well all year, and I think he needs another few years to fully develop. If Vish can learn how to put himself in position and dish out the hits when appropriate (something Scott Stevens would be great at teaching), then he'd be ok. Overall, I think the defense just needs to play better and smarter.
Goalie: I know Brodeur is great, but the Devils need to start planning for the future. I think they need to look toward the draft for a good, young prospect who could take over when Brodeur is gone. Granted, this guy could probably play 10 more years in the league and be great, but the team needs to plan for the future.
That being said, next year Brodeur cannot play 78 games. Sutter needs to tell him to take a break and let Weekes (or whomever the backup is) get some games in. I'm not saying Brodeur should only play 50 games, but I think he should be capped at 65. That way he can get the rest he needs and be good for the playoffs. I know he wants to put this team on his back, and I admire that. But there comes a time when that can hurt, and I think we've seen it the past few years.
Sutter: I like what he did this year. He really changed the philosophy of this team and made them more offensive minded and willing to attack. We didn't see the fruits of it, but I think that's because Sutter didn't have the right personnel and because too many guys had off years. I think he needs to go back and drill defense and breakout, because these are the two areas that struggled the most during the playoffs. I think if Lou can give Sutter a few pieces to fit his system, the Devils can do better on the offensive end and actually make noise in the playoffs next year. I also think he needs to be able to gauge his players and fit them on lines where they can play the entire year and learn one another's tendencies.
Overall, it was a good year for the Devils team, but it left a lot to be desired. I think we've been spoiled as fans by good teams throughout the years, but now we see what a "depleted" defensive corps and limited scoring can do. I can only hope that Lou will look at this team and add the right pieces in order to give the team any chance of going deep into the playoffs next year.

Very well said and I agree with it all. Can you imagine if Broduer wasn't back there? This team would not have been where it was. Overall this isn't a Championship caliber team. Hopefully the summer brings a few skilled players who can fill in areas you mentioned.

I've been a loyal Devils fan since 1982 - I even have a Colorado Rockies souvenir puck purchased the summer before they arrived - so I've lived through the lean years as well as the good ones. I've been a hockey fan for a lot longer than that.
During the past 13 years especially is that, while they've been a successful team and it's always nice to support a winner, they've been one-dimensional, with everything subordinated to defense and especially goaltending.
What struck me as hard as the countless games this year where the team struggled to score, and especially as the Devils going down to the Rangers without winning a single game at the Rock, was the Bruins-Canadiens game 6 played yesterday.
If you saw the third period of that game, maybe you reacted the same way I did -- damn, this game can be FUN TO WATCH when the teams are scoring. And this is coming from an ex-goaltender.
I shared my personal anecdote about Lou Lamoriello on a different post and won't pound on him here, but I wonder if he has the imagination and the fortitude to finally tear the team down and rebuild it as one that can win in the so-called "new" NHL. Just as important, I wonder if he can rebuild the team as one that can be fun to watch as well.
I've pulled my Devils-logo-Stanley Cup logo and gone to the image of the player I tried to emulate as a college intramural goalie back in the mid-70s. I loved watching those Canadien teams not just for Ken Dryden's puck-stopping, but because those teams played really entertaining hockey. Let's hope we as Devils fans will get the same combination some day.

Well said SC. I loved that third period of the game and I wish I saw some things like that coming from our forwards. I would hope that Lou could do something to bring in a scorer, but we'll have to see.

The difference between you three and lots of other Devil fans, you guys acknowledged your teams weaknesses and are giving good reasons as to what happened to them all season. Other dudes are blaming officials, Brodeur, Avery, Ice, weather anything they can. BUT I do realize this is days later and im sure many Devil fans have cooled off by now. Anyway enjoy the rest of the playoffs guys and dare I say it on this thread but- Lets Go Rangers. Sorry had to thro that in. Later.

Now,that it is over.Yes everything has calmed and the Devils Wheels are like the wheels of Justice ever turning so slowly. If in fact the two issues of Sutter saying marty was''Mentally tired '' and Lou saying''I am to young to retire...and I have Mr.Vanderbeek's full support moving forward'' are all true that will be the basis in which to start to address this years problems and remedies to get something going next year.First off,Sutter and Lou NEED to use Weekes more!!!!ENd of Story I am tired of hearing Marty can handle it,No he CANT I said that and Callahan Swooping in and scoring is a Mental Lapse by Marty,Fatigued end of story. Will Lou do a total Tear down and rebuild properly??After all the Ranger youngsters looked good and if you want to say they werent the reason they beat the devils fine,But they Gained experience and didnt hurt the Rangers.Maybe its time for a rebuild.Lou Listens and does as he pleases.....will he olook into the mirror and be happy with bending and changing his ways, which as of Lately hasnt been to appealing to most Devil Fans.If Lou Continues as he has,The Devils will make the playoffs and be out in the fiorst round again, this team needs Major additions and needs to be adjusted to the current newer NHL ....if that doesnt happen,Sadly history will repeat itself.

Hey DiNiro, we still hate the Rangers and Avery, but you can't undo the past. I'm glad most of our fans have been able to calm down and take objective looks at the team and make informed arguments.

Here's an informed argument for all of you who have Marteeeeee avatars. You will never win with the whale in goal. He's at least 30 lbs overweight, he's old and he's lost 2 steps but he still thinks he's 15 yrs younger and won't compensate for it. Get yourself a great young goalie like the King and a few players who know how to play hockey like Avery and start from scratch

SA4 you should be proud of your Rangers they played very well but they havent and probably wont win a cup this year , but if I'm wrong I'll sport some sort of Rangers avatar for a month of your choice if they dont win the cup this year you have to have a Marty avatar for a month starting the day after they are booted from the playoffs
deal ?

You drive a hard bargain. I wish I could say yes but with all the people who keep getting me kicked out of here because they don't like what I have to say, it will probably be a long time before I get enough points to be able to post my own avatar. Too bad I'm sure I could find a clip of Marty flopping around on the ice
