I just heard on WGN that the Reds might be interested in bringing Mike in. I know he is a terrible catcher but his bat may be able to help the offense. The way we are looking lately, we need some help somewhere. What are your thoughts?

His defense has never been good. He would bring right handed power to our line up. I don't think it would be bad if he played against lefty pitching.

Hey Harry, check out this thread from a few days ago. Some good discussion on what Piazza's role might be with the Reds:

Sounds like he'd probably platoon with Votto at 1st. Hatteburg has pretty much become expendable with Votto heating up. It would be sad to see him go, because I think he's a really good presence in the clubhouse, but...

The Reds don't need to bring in Piazza, that is not the answer to increase production from the right side of the plate. His best years are over and he would be nothing more then a once a week player as well as a inch hitter. Bring up Cabrera, or Hairston both had good spring trainings. Ross i know had a poor year last year lets hope when he gets up here that will change, or it will be another bad move by Krivsky extending his contract and throwing all that cash away.

If Mike was to be signed, it would be as a righthanded bat at 1B. He's not going to catch. And what is it with the Reds constantly going after 40 year old players? Enough already!

If you look, Paul Bako is having a good season and David Ross will be back soon. We would be better off to save the money and spend it on some pitching later this season if we are still in the race.

Krivsky will probably give him the standard contract he gives all his geriatric players- a 2 year deal...I'm getting pretty tired of signing 38-40 year olds- Cormier, Mercker, Guardado, Weathers, Conine...hell, Dusty's not much older, and he's a righty bat- let him platoon with Paterson, too while you're at it....
Piazza was a horrible catcher at 26....but he did hit the ball....he's worse defensively now, and frankly isn't feared at the plate either- that's why he's unemployed- the best reason I know of to keep him that way... Why pay Piazza a few million dollars to hit .260 to play 1st base twice a week, when you have Andy Phillips (that plays 3 other positions and hit .290 with the Yankees last year) in AAA for $350k ?
The problems with this team are obvious-and Mike Piazza isn't going to help much to solve ANY of them: 2 lefty catchers, 2 lefty firstbasemen, 3 lefty starting outfielders, and only 2 lefty pitchers, both bad, on this roster. Not to mention that the lefty hitters all hit like women against lefties, but rarely platoon. Unless Piazza can pitch the 7th & 8th innings, catch better than the defects we already have, or hit better than he has the past 2 years, I think any rational GM would pass on him....we'll see...

Dude, Weathers has been here for a number of years now, before he was 38 im pretty sure, and he was our entire bullpen last season. Give the guy some credit. Mercker has been lights out this year too. And what did you have against Conine? I was sad to see him go. I do agree, however, that Piazza can kiss Reds nation's ass and go somewhere else. Both Jolbert Cabrera and Hairston have been great thus far in AAA. Bring one up and see what happens. Also, it looks like EE is warming up a bit. He will turn it around, mark my words.

just think PIAZZA behind JR. & DUNN.he can still catch and his d-fence was always good.he still wants to catch,if they get him thats were i think he will play.VOTTO will go nowere.he will stay at 1st.if it ment PIAZZA or VOTTO .it would be VOTTO all the way.but DUNN could get 60 HRs with PIAZZA behind him .PIAZZA WOULD HAVE 25 ALSO.
GO Reds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
