My fellow Cardinals fans, as we all know, the offseason has been long over with and spring training is becoming a more fading memory as we focus toward a long difficult season, approaching the middle of April.

However, thinking back into this past offseason, I now wish to know your thoughts about the SS position. Of all of the available shortstops, our new rookie GM John Mozeliak decided to sign Cesar Izturis. So far this season, Iztu has been a decent surprise. He has an .405 OBP and what is the most surprising is his BB versus K's. He has walked 8 times versus only 3 strikeouts through 12 games.

I now ask for your input. Considering what I just mentioned above, who would have been your shortstop? Would it have been the former Cardinal Edgar Renteria, Orlando Cabrera or Cesar Izturis? And may I also ask why?

  • Here are the season stats (through at least 10 games) to consider;
  • Edgar Renteria (Detroit Tigers) G=11  AB=45  H=11  2B=3  3B=0  HR=0  RBI=3  TB=14  BB=3  SO=8  SB=0  CS=0  OBP=.292  SLG= .311  AVG= .244
  • Next is Orlando Cabrera (Chicago White Sox) G=10  AB=36  H=7  2B=1  3B=0  HR=1  RBI=4  TB=11  BB=7  SO=4  SB=1  CS=0  OBP=.341  SLG=.306  AVG=.194
  • Last is our Cesar Izturis (Cardinals)  G=12  AB=32  H=7  2B=2  3B=0  HR=0  RBI=1  TB=9  BB=8  SO=3  SB=1  CS=1  OBP=.405  SLG=.281  AVG=.219

Do you think Mr. Mozeliak made the correct decision?    68

Iztu is doing decent but I realy miss watching Renteria play.  Especially when he was a cardinal his defense was very underated....he used to get to balls that no other short stop did, and without stupid jump moves like jeter.  A lot of people miss eckstein, but i could never fully apreciate his lack of range after watching edgar for so long.  That being said, he is not the player he used to be and had a much higher price tag than izturis, who is hopefully just a one year stop gap until Ryan can be the starter.

Given the three options, I think Izturis is the choice I would've made too because a) I was never a big Renteria fan (long story) and b) Izturis' defense is far superior to the rest on the group.

12 games is hardly enough of a sample size to determine the quality.  Heck it's not even 10% of the season!  Ask again in June.  Remember Bo Hart?  He had a terrific first fifteen games, but faded quickly afterwards.

When Aubrey Huff played for the Rays, he was notorious for being a slow starter, yet he managed to hit 20-30 HR's and hit over .250.  Mozeliak's decision will be judged as the season progresses.

On another note, I think the Cards were dumb to let Edgar go.  But, he hasn't been as productive with Boston or Atlanta as he was with St. Louis.

There is going to be a "good" problem once Ryan gets back from the DL in a few weeks. Listened to his start yesterday with Palm Beach along with Mulder. That means you have Izturis, Ryan, Miles and Kennedy in the middle infield. Plenty of stability there and all these guys can put the ball in play and Kennedy has a little more power. Thoughts?
