We can't make the mistake of looking at stats to compare these two. Malone played on THE hottest line in the NHL for a majority of the season [Spezza, Heatley, Alfredsson was hottest to start], so Malone's numbers are going to be a little bloated. I mean did Rob Brown deserve a big payday b/c he scored 49 goals and 115 pts playing on a line with Lemiuex? I'm not saying Malkin is anywhere near Lemieux but you can be sure if Sykora or Malone leave for more money their production WILL fall. Now Malone is no Brown either. Malone is great on the PK which we've been lacking for years, but Hossa is also a good defensive forward.
I think Malone should relize how good his situation is and stay for less than what his agent will tell him is his "market value" to play for his hometown team, and Hossa should sign for less to get an opportunity for cups AND he will not be the focal point of the best opposition's best defenseman which could mean an extended career. Of course, I'm a little biased and sometimes like to dream.

I like the way you think IBleedBnG66!
It would be great for all of it to shake out like that. I also agree with Crowdog about keeping as many of these players we have right now and if that means letting Hossa go for the likes of Malone and keeping an extra player or so with the money we will save then that is the way to go.
Hands down Hossa is better but there are so many intangibles its hard to say at this point in the season which way to lean.

I wanna see them sign Malone. He plays with heart, and he's a Pittsburgh Boy. Nothing against Hossa, but #12 is my guy.

Crow,
I understand your point 100%, but it may be closer than you think. What do you think Ryan Malone would get in the open market? Look at Daniel Briere's contact that the Flyers gave him, 10 Million dollars a year, an increase of 5 million dollars from what the Sabres were paying him. Daniel Briere had a few good seasons and one great season, roughly the same as Malone. Do you think there isn't one team in the NHL that would offer Malone half of that. Everyone is talking about the "hometown discount" and at 28 Ryan Malone is going to be trying to strike it big on this contract. Marian Hossa turned down 7 million to stay with the Thrashers which may or may not be in his ballpark of what he wants. If #18 wants to stay here he won't be paid more than Sidney Crosby. I do believe that the Bruins, Senators, and Devils would probably offer Hossa more than the Penguins but if he wants to win and prolong his prime he'd stay here. All things considered, in my opinion there is a better chance of Hossa taking less than market price than Malone. Ryan Malone has yet to have a big payday, he's made 1.5 million this year and I just think he would be easily swayed by 5 million dollars elsewhere so to stay here it's going to have to be close. Hossa on the other hand got a 3yr deal for 18 million when he was with the Senators and may sign for 7 or 7.5 million. If it came down to losing Evgeni Malkin I'd give them both pink slips but if Hossa wants 7 or 7.5 million to sign and Malone wants anywhere between 4 and 5, I'd still take Marian Hossa without blinking.

Don't forget Ray Shero was assistant GM when Marian Hossa was drafted 12th overall in the 1997 draft by the Senators. Shero wasn't with the Pens when Ryan Malone was taken in the fourth round in 1999. Shero inherited Malone, and was close to trading him on a few occasions from what the media has reported. Regardless, we have two all word centers and need a top scoring winger to play with them on shifts and the powerplay. Good luck Penguins, finding a better one out there than Marian Hossa if he decides to leave.

Rare in sports these days, yet you still see it now and then.
Say the Pens go to the Conference Finals (or Stanley Cup) and have all pieces remaining.
Would Hossa be kind enough to take a 'pay cut' to make sure both get signed? Not like he needs more money. True winners devoted to the franchise do such things in sports with salary caps (like the NFL). It would really show that Hossa would want to stick around for a winning team and would be a selfless act congratulated by not only his peers, but the organization and fans.
Or am I just full of wishful thinking? :)
Pens all the way!
