Buccaneers: Wilson continues to gain praise

Friday 4/11/08

Eugene Wilson continues to gain praise with his new team, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Team defensive backs coach Raheem Morris stated, "You can't say enough good things about him. He's looking like a stud right now." He is expected to make a solid transition from safety to cornerback this season, and is going to challenge the oft-injured Brian Kelly for his starting spot, as Morris commented, "We have an open corner spot. We want to see what goes down there. Guys have to jump up and compete. (Kelly) left and he was a big part of us, but we have guys who are ready to step up."

Our View: His fantasy stock will continue to rise.

Thanks for the quote. they didnt do a great job of being accurate though. They say he will challenge Brian Kelly for his spot, then the next sentence they say what is actually the situation, which is that Kelly is gone (to the Lions). Would be nice to have him as a corner as Jackson seems to have his safety spot solidified and Phillips isnt going anywhere either (plus Sabby Piscitelli is in the mix if he stays healthy).

Couldn't agree more.

But the short story was a 'nice to know.'   I'd love to see Wilson come in and dominate like Cato June did last year.  It's nice to get FA's coming to us as tough losses from other teams.

I like that.

Anybody notice how we have been using the "Patriots" old FA recipe the last couple of years?  Sign quality, solid mid 20's starters.  Not big names for big money, but solid depth.

i like to hear wilson is doing well, maybe he is finally getting healthy and will revert back to the 2004 form where he was a pro-bowl quality safety. i'll agree the pats & bucs have close to the same FA philosphy. i don't see wilson making the same impact on defence as Cato June though.

Yes I have noticed that trend.  In the beginning of the Gruden era it was big names past their prime, mainy because they were trying to do a quick fix to go back to the SB.  After that didn't work we had to work out of salary cap hell created by McKay mostly and Gruden and Allen somewhat.  Now they are spending wisely.

The main players they have signed: Faine, Lehman, Wilson, McCoy, Douglas  are all solid players, with a couple pro-bowl potetnials in their late 20's.  Plus we resigned Bennet and his potential.  The only older guys are Dunn and Greise who can come in and be backups, hopefully with something to prove, plus Greise knows the system.   Excellent game plan.  No need to blow the wad on 2 big names that will eat up salary for 5 years.

Add in a young WR, CB and DT and we are starting to see a great core for the future.

We've definitely gone in the right direction with FAs.  The potential to step in and really contribute is far better now than in the past.  The juy is still out on whether any will have pro bowl seasons or not.

A great core for the future would be great, but I'm not sure we'd be as fortunate as we were before when we got Sapp, Brooks, and Lynch.

"A great core for the future would be great, but I'm not sure we'd be as fortunate as we were before when we got Sapp, Brooks, and Lynch."

we do have the potential to be great again. We have Agreat group of young safties, with Sabby Piscitelli in the mold of a young John Lynch, we have Gaines Adams on the D-line whom I believe will have a stellar second year and become a leader on the line. We also have Cato June who is a phenomenal LB and again has the potential t obe a leader. I know Sabby is comming off of an injury but if you ever saw him play at Oregon State you would see a hard worker and an even harder hitter, I can't wait to see him on the feild. I know don't count your chickens till their hatched......but look at what we do have and tell me that we don't have the players there to have that great core. This is my opinion however so what do you guys think.

I absolutely agree.

Jackson, Phillips, and Sabby make up a great safety set.

Our lbs are young and good: June, Ruud, Black...  Brooks is still productive for now and I can't wait to see what Black can do when he becomes a starter in a year or two.

Our offensive line is good and has the ptential to become great.

We have a stable of RBs

Our weaknesses can be addressed in this draft:  a speedy WR to eventually replace Galloway and a young CB to get in the mix with Barber, Buchannon, and Wilson.

Alot of people think we need a young QB, I don't.  We have Garcia for 2 more years, a vet backup who knows the offense in Greise, and a young QB in McCown who has shown potential.

I know I am not objective being a fan, but I try to be.  I look at the schedule, though, and I see the potential for us to get off to a very fast start.  Don't be surprised if we have a 12 win season.

I like your optimism!  But unfortunately I only see us getting to 10 wins...but we will be competing for division or a wild card spot.

Since we won the division last year, we have a tougher schedule than last year and I think the Saints and the Panthers will be much better than last year and both will be in the hunt for the division.

Our losses will be:  Panthers (split), Saints (split), Packers, Cowboys, Chargers and either Seahawks, Broncos or, Vikings...we are not winning all three of those games.
