I have now seen Edmonds play a few games in center and so far it doesn't look good.  I know he used to win Gold Gloves but that was in the past.  He just doesn't have the same first step he used to, and his recent years offense doesn't give me much confidence in his ability to help us.  I liked the line-up much better with Hairston in Center and McAnulty in Left.  I have a feeling by seasons end the Padres will be shopping for a Center Fielder, I just hope we don't have to give up too much for one.

Yeah, every time the ball is hit to center my heart jumps. He has problems batting, he can't run therefore he has problems fielding.

I was at the Peavy vs. Penny game and Edmonds blew 2 catches.

Very disappointing.

He has lost his power at the plate and his range in center. You will see Hairston in center and Headley in left before the end of the season I'm sure. Hell, Edmonds will probably get hurt anyway so the Padres won't have to force the issue.

The Padres specialty.  A one-time outstanding player on the downside of his career.

Edmonds needs to sit. The Pads should just put Headley out in left and Hairston in CF; problem solved.

Let Edmonds stay for two more weeks.  If there isn't improvement, then the Hairston-McAnulty thing sounds real good.

After today's lost to AZ, I pretty much gave up on Jimmy. I'm sorry I really hate you when you use to rob our doubles or even triples back in the days.

Time to move one and play some of our young guns.

I think we should keep in mind that Jim Edmonds missed most of spring training with that  calf injury.  Even a veteran like Edmonds needs a little time to get his swing and timing down.  At the moment,  I'll forgive him for not producing at the plate.

Regarding his defense, however,  I agree he looks slow out in CF.  I am wondering if that calf injury is not fully healed or if father time has just caught up with him?   At any rate, I would welcome a trade for a rangy CF like a Reggie Willits or Coco Crisp.

Let's go Padres!

Unlike most I actually liked the acquisition of Jim Edmonds, we didnt give up much and got cash consideratons. Even though hes past his prime, he is still serviceable and provides a decent bat. Because I for one would rather have Edmonds at the plate with 2 outs over some of our other options. I think the biggest thing though is it is a 1 year pact. I just saw him as someone who could allow us to be competitive this year without splurging on someone like an andrew jones. (I'm so happy he went to the Dodgers). I dont want to throw in the towel on edmonds yet. A trade for Reggie Willits or Coco Crisp would be ok, but do we know if Matt Antonelli is going to play 2nd base or center field?

I am going to have to disagree with practically everybody! You must have been the people who were talking trash about Maddux early in the season last year when he wasn't doing very well. Jim just needs to warm up! He hasn't played this early in the season during the last two years! I'm proud of him being out there and he's getting ahold of some balls pretty well I think. But most importantly, he is an amazing teacher and leader in the outfield. Hairston will benefit from his presence. I think Jim will turn it around come the end of the month and everyone will have different opinions.

Ohshnapitzwill,
I think the biggest thing though is it is a 1 year pact. I just saw him as someone who could allow us to be competitive this year without splurging on someone like an Andruw Jones.Word!  This is a great point and I feel it is lost on many Padres fans.  Not only are the Dodgers on the hook for Jones next year, but for Juan Pierre for three additional seasons. Even if Jim Edmonds doesn't turn it around this season, at least he can't hurt us for two.

but do we know if Matt Antonelli is going to play 2nd base or center field? He is listed on the Portland Beavers website as a second baseman and considering Tadahito Iguchi only signed a 1 year deal, I am going to assume he will remain a second baseman...but you know what happens when one assUmes.

You give rookies and second year guys a month to warm up, not veterans.  I mean the guy is hitting under .200.  We don't need an outfield mentor, we need someone who can put the bat on the ball.  The Padre's are losing games to the Astro's and the Giants, 2 teams that were picked to finish far behind the Padres this year.  Bringing in Edmonds more than anything was the Padre's being the Padre's, signing an over the hill player and hoping he can live up to his past glory.  If we are supposed to suffer through Edmonds warming up, why not sit him down and suffer through Chase Headley in left and Scott Hairston in center.  At least then we can look forward to something, look how Kous has come around after his bad start last year.

Edmonds has had his time.  He and Iguchi are at the "Mendoza line" and it is time to correct that mistake.  Send them to Lake Elsinore and bring up anybody from the Minors.  For that matter we can trade them for Rick Ankiel (sarcasm).
