The Pads are top 3 in hitting and top 3 in pitching and they are playing .500 baseball.  They just lost 2 out of 3 to a team that is in the bottom 3 of both hitting and pitching.  What gives?  Runners left in scoring position looks to be the prime culprit at this point.

We also need to work on catching opposing base runners. We still seem to have that curse of the last few season....we can't catch anyone! We got one yesterday but still gave up a few. If we can't do anything with RISP we can't allow them to have an easy opportunity to! Please Bard, please. If  he cant fix it, we need to go back to pitching fundamentals.

Top 3 in hitting doesn't mean anything when the hits are all singles and come when there's nobody on base.

Edmonds seems to be a flop at this point.  He's bat has been less than impressive and his defense has been sub par.  He doesn't seemed to be getting a very good jump on the ball.  He had two plays last night, both were not routine, but makeable and he didn't make either.  You can say it's early and all that, but one more win last April it Holiday never has a chance to score without touching home plate.

I noticed something on Bard's throw to second base.  It looks like he's coming out of his crouch to late.  Last night in the 9th, as Bell came to the plate he squated lower as the runner took off.  In no way am I catching expert, but it seems like the problem isn't his actual throws (they look strong), but the time it takes from the ball hitting his glove to the time he releases the ball.

I agree, he takes forever to get rid of the ball. But I'm more worried about his at bat with men on second and third with nobody out. Those were the worst swings by anyone I've seen in a while and on balls not even close to the strike zone. The strikeout pitch he missed by three feet, it was ugly.

Yeah, that was an ugly ab to say the least.  He literaly had to move his back foot so he didn't get hit while swinging.  It was very un-Bard like.  The last couple of years he's been our best bet with RISP.  If I'm not mistaken, he was in the high .300s last year.

But, to give him some credit and not just beat up on him, his throw to get the base runner earlier in the game was a strike and it wasn't an easy pitch to throw down on.

I know right now Edmonds seems to be a dud, but I feel that in time he will progress. Remember he hasn't played more that 120 games combined over the last 2 seasons. He is going to get at least that many this season. He just needs to warm up a little and he'll get his fundamentals back.  Right now I'm thinking of him as the Maddux of the outfield. His experience and previous talent goes a long way in terms of being a leader for everyone else.

I hope you're right and Edmonds gets things turned around a bit.  I think his offensive production will definitely come up with some more consistent at-bats, but I'm not convinced his defense will be anywhere near what the Padre's are hoping to get out of him.  He's never been a player who got really good jumps on fly balls, but he's always had the athletic talent to make up for it.  He's getting up there in age and wear and he's lost a step or two.  But hopefully, I'm just a dumb fan who thinks he knows more about baseball than he actually does and he'll prove me wrong all season long.

Go Pads... Time to beat up on the Dodgers like Arizona did.
