CBS badly wanted the east coast - west coast of UNC-UCLA matchup in the final. They openly rooted for Carolina throughout the entire tournament. The worst possible scenario for CBS TV ratings has come true. Memphis-Kansas is not what they wanted, but it's what they got, like it or not. The truth is that the two best teams are playing Monday night. Kansas and Memphis were clearly better teams than UNC and UCLA. Carolina benefitted greatly from an undeserved #1 overall seed, and played at "home" for all of their games. The first time they have to leave North Carolina, they get hammered. UCLA and Collison looked like boyz against men. Collison particularly looked soft, and in disappointing fashion, quit at the end. He wanted out of the game when it was out of hand. Gutless. In the end, the sundrenched beachboys of California and country club blue bloods of Carolina will be watching the real men play on Monday night. Bite it Packer.

I think you are oversimplifying this a bit.
Sure UCLA would have brought in a huge audience, but UNC does not bring big numbers outside of the Southeast. If it was UCONN or G'Town I would agree, but most tri-state residents can't place North Carolina on a map. I live in Boston and they know a map of Europe better than the US South up here. Odd...
I think this matchup has more marquee value than you think. These are OBVIOUSLY the two best teams in the country. They both dominated. This is also the most talented Final 4, perhaps ever.
We may have 2 of the best college teams on the floor in a long time. There will be 7-8 NBA players on the floor, and a handful of lottery picks depending on who stays and goes when.
I think the hype will overcome the demographics. Remember that no matter how you cut it, 90-95% of viewers will not be for either team.
Kansas is a small state, but in the Big 12 covers a population of about 45+ million people, and Kansas has more alums in Chicago than Kansas City or St. Louis. Big 12 fans are very good about rooting in conference. KU was the clear favorite among the neutral Texans in the Alamo Dome...
UCLA not being in the game might lose 2 million households that you easily pick up between the Rockies and the Ohio Valley.

CBS bias, how about officiating bias?
Is there an official count for how many times Golden Boy Tyler Hansborough and his outmatched Tarheels got obnoxious charging calls to go their way? It seemed that the only way they could slow KU down was to slide underneath someone driving or jumping towards the rim and pray for a charge. This game shouldn't have even been this close especially if the NCAA used the same arc under the basket as the NBA. The officials wanted this one more than UNC!

Does Billy Packer watch film of the teams he is getting ready to do games on? Just watching that makes me sick. It was very obvious he had seen no film of Kansas this year. How many times when they were running their offense that they ran ALL season did he talk about that being a play that they just drew up. I can't believe that CBS can't get someone better to do the Final Four. Get a clue CBS, this guy is way past his prime and obviously doesn't have the desire to prepare to do his JOB at the level that this stage deserves.

I may have seen some officiating bias too in both games. Too bad Memphis was too good for UCLA and UCLA couldn't even guard them. I was wondering if the refs were going to put NC over the top in the KS game.

Mauxdeverite,
I agree with you 100%. In the UCLA-Memphis game, Packer was his usual self - he hardly gave Memphis credit for anything, except towards the end, when it was obvious they were going to win. He attributed most of their success to UCLA's mistakes. In the next game, he showed a little improvement. I get the impression that he doesn't care for any of the non-traditional teams. If your team doesn't pass the ball at least 3 times before shooting, Packer can't stand you.

Well done analysis! Could not agree more! I'm a KU fan and I had almost been brainwashed by CBS (and yes even ESPN) into not even watching the game. Nobody gave KU a chance. ACC #1 rated conference -- big L. Pac 10 #2 rated conference -- big L. Clearly there are other conferences that CBS and the other 'media folk' should be paying attention to. Great Memphis team and a great KU team. Best 2 teams are definitely playing for the title.

Amen brother - the NCAA needs to address the flopping non-sense from both Duke and UNC. It is absolutely ridiculous that an off the ball flop in the post can draw a charge call - worst call I've seen in awhile.
And why does Billy Packer always have to tell us that someone does something "as well as anbody in the college game" about 50 times every game?
